Streaks End For Holy Angels, Richfield Boys Hockey Teams

Stars topped in Missota for first time in a decade, while Spartans win first Classic Suburban game of the season.

A six-game Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) winless streak came to an end for the Richfield boys hockey team on Thursday as a far, far longer winning run also reached a conclusion for the Holy Angels boys hockey squad on a momentous evening in area sports.

Holy Angels Boys Hockey: Chaska 5, Stars 3

A 141-game Missota Conference winning streak came to close for the Holy Angels boys hockey team as the Stars fell, 5-3, at Chaska.

The Hawks, a first-year member of the Missota, stopped 43 of 46 Holy Angels shots to hand the visitors its first conference defeat since a 2-1 defeat to Red Wing on Jan. 30, 2001.

Chaska, currently seventh in the eight-team Missota, was not exactly the most favored candidate to end a decade of domination, but led throughout the contest en route to the stunning victory.

Individual statistics were not currently available for the Stars, who lost for the second time in 24 hours after a 6-0 setback against at the on Wednesday.

Holy Angels, now 15-8 overall and 11-1 in the Missota, host Red Wing on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Richfield Boys Hockey: Spartans 6, Henry Sibley 2

The Richfield boys hockey team won its second game in a row and first in Classic Suburban play this winter with a 6-2 defeat of visiting Henry Sibley.

Tyler Martinez and Sam Schrick scored twice apiece, with Patrick Peterson and Mick Dhein logging one goal each as Donovan Keller made 30 saves in the Spartans' net for the victory.

The win stopped a six-game winless skid for Richfield in circuit play and improved the Spartans to 1-5-1 in the Classic Suburban and 8-12-1 overall.

Up next for the Spartans is a trip to Wakota Arena for a conference matchup against South St. Paul at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Labate Nominated For Mr. Hockey

Holy Angels forward Joseph LaBate was one of ten finalists named for the Mr. Hockey award that acknowledges the top senior hockey player in the state of Minnesota.

LaBate has accumulated 45 points this season through Feb. 9, with 25 goals and 20 assists.

The Mr. Hockey winner is scheduled to be announced at a banquet on Sunday, March 13.
