A native of south Minneapolis, Tom has spent the bulk of the past decade covering high school sports throughout the metropolitan area for a number of publications, including Sun Newspapers, Vype Magazine and the Woodbury Bulletin. An avid sports fan, Tom cut his teeth in sports journalism covering the Iowa State Cyclones sports teams after a short stint as a staff writer for the Iowa State Daily, where he wrote about everything from fashion shows to entomology festivals. After spending some time away from the journalistic arts, Carothers returned to school in the early 2000s. He worked two years as the editor of the City College News at Minneapolis Community and Technical College and interned for Skyway News – now known as Downtown Journal – before beginning his high school sports coverage career in earnest at the Sun Focus. Still as enthused about his occupation as he was on day one, Tom relishes the opportunity to highlight the efforts of prep athletes and loves to call arenas and stadiums his "office."
