The weekend passed without a victory for the and girls hockey teams as both the Spartans and Stars were defeated in their respective non-conference matchups.
Simley 3, Holy Angels 2
Holy Angels came within a goal of defeating their host Simley thanks to the efforts of Stars goaltender Kelly Mellon and her 33 saves, but the home team squeaked out a 3-2 win at Vet's Arena in Inver Grove Heights.
Simley outshot the Stars 31-2 through two periods, yet the game remained scoreless until Simley scored a pair of goals at 5:27 and 9:22 in the third period.
Stars forward Bridget Thompson scored a goal at 10:56, but Simley scored yet again at 14:39.
Forward Jessica Block's short-handed goal at 16:15 made for an interesting final 45 seconds, but Simley hung on to claim the narrow triumph and drop the Stars to 1-2 on the season.
Holy Angels will host Chaska/Chanhassen (1-2) at on Dec. 2 at 7:15 p.m.
Apple Valley 3, Richfield 1
Richfield goalie once again proved to be a standout player with 50 saves Saturday night. However, those 50 saves were not enough to earn her team a win as the Spartans fell to 0-5-1 on the year in a 3-2 loss to the visiting Apple Valley Eagles.
Apple Valley scored two goals in the first period and one more in the second before forward Holly Chapin scored the Spartans' lone goal at 10:39 in the third period. Richfield managed just 11 shots during the game.
The Spartans have a week off and will return on Dec. 4 to host St. Louis Park (1-2 overall) at the Richfield Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
