Richfield's Jegtvig Commits to St. Scholastica

Richfield senior catcher to attend, play baseball for Duluth-based college next year.

Tyler Jegtvig, a catcher and co-captain for the , has committed to attend the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN and play for the Saints.

St. Scholastica is a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and perennial national baseball powerhouse. The Saints are currently ranked in the Top 25 NCAA Division III nationwide poll. 

The Spartan senior also received interest from other area colleges such as Gustavus Adolphus University, Univeristy of St. Olaf, University of St. Thomas, University of Minnesota-Crookston, Crown College and Bethany Lutheran University.

However, for Jegtvig, there was something special about St. Scholastica, the Saints baseball team and Head Coach Corey Kemp which made the difference.

“There were things that I liked about the other schools and coaches I visited and met with,” Jegtvig said. “But there was something special about Coach Kemp, the coaching staff and the players for the Saints that made it feel like a family to me. What also impressed me is that every coach on the staff is a former Saints player."

Jegtvig added, “After my formal visit to Scholastica last October and spending an overnight with some of my future teammates I knew that’s where I was meant to go.”

The feeling is mutual between player and coach.

“Tyler is a strong athletic catcher who we believe will develop into a good college baseball player.  His love for the game and his work ethic has been very clear to me since we first met last summer,” Kemp said. “I know that he is excited to be a part of our baseball program and we are equally excited to have him on campus this fall.”

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound catcher has three years of varsity experience and was also a three year starting running back for Richfield’s football squad, lettering each year. Jegtvig is also the starting catcher for the Richfield Reds American Legion team and was named to the 2010 All-District team.

Academically, Jegtvig plans to major in elementary education and coaching. He was also awarded the College of St. Scholastica Dean’s Benedictine Scholarship for his academic achievements.
