Richfield Softball Season Ends While Spartans, Stars Run for State Today

Orono denies Spartans softballers a return to state tournament on Tuesday.

The spring sports season continued to wind down as the was denied a return trip to the state tournament on Tuesday as members of the Spartans and Stars track and field teams will make their runs for state today in Section 3AA championship meet.

Richfield Softball: Orono Eliminates Spartans in Eight Innings

Orono pushed across a run in the eighth inning to defeat the , 5-4, eliminating the Spartans in the one-loss semifinal bracket of the Section 6AAA Tournament Tuesday.

Individual statistics from the game were not available. Richfield, the defending sectional champion and seeded third this season, defeated St. Louis Park in its 6AAA opener before losing to Wayzata in round two on May 26.

Orono, which had dropped to the one-loss bracket after being defeated by Hopkins, was again topped by the Royals in the one-loss final in the game that followed its win over Richfield and was also eliminated from the postseason.

The Spartans concluded the spring with an 11-9 record.

Richfield and Holy Angels Track & Field: 3AA Finals at University of St. Thomas

Both the and and field teams will both compete in the Section 3AA championship finals at the University of St. Thomas on Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m.

Individual qualifiers from the Spartans and Stars will advance to the state Class AA meet, to take place at Hamline University on June 10-11.
