Fall Sports Season Begins For Richfield, Holy Angels Squads

Several local athletic squads commence 2011 campaigns.

A number of teams from and the began their fall sports season last week, with more set squads to start this week.

Holy Angels Girls Soccer

The Holy Angels girls soccer team does have a win, but is still 0-1-1 officially on the season.

Following a scoreless tie in the first day of competition in the Showcase Tournament, the Stars defeated host Benilde-St. Margaret's in a penalty shootout to claim a berth in the championship game against at BSM on Tuesday.

However, since the contest ended in a regulation tie, that is how it appears in the records.

Holy Angels followed that deadlock up with a 3-1 loss to Totino-Grace, with Courtney Moynihan scoring the Stars' first official goal of the season.

Richfield Boys Soccer

The at Minneapolis Washburn last Thursday by a score of 2-0. Goalkeeper Eduardo Ivan Chavero Hernandez made five saves.

Holy Angels Boys Soccer

With a 5-0 win to Minnehaha Academy last Thursday and a 4-0 loss to Minneapolis Southwest last Saturday, the Holy Angels boys soccer team enters the second week of its season with a 1-1 record.

Shon Jordan and Sam Brenny are tied for the Stars' scoring lead with two goals apiece against the Redhawks, with Alex Czachor and Tyler Warmack logging two assists each in the opener. Goalkeeper Danny Urzua has made 10 saves through two games.

Richfield Girls Tennis

The Richfield girls tennis team played in four matches last week, including three in a doubles tournament it hosted on Saturday.

In that tournament, the Spartans defeated neighboring Holy Angels 4-2, while losing 4-2 to Bloomington Jefferson and 5-1 to Burnsville. 

Richfield had previously opened the season with a 4-3 loss to Minneapolis Southwest last Tuesday and entered this week with a 1-3 record. Individual statistics were not available.

Holy Angels Girls Tennis

The Holy Angels girls tennis team entered this week with a 4-3 record as the busiest local club thus far, with three tournaments under its collective belt (Mora, Lakeville, Richfield) this autumn.

The Stars have victories over Mora (7-0), Duluth Marshall (7-0), Eveleth-Gilbert (4-3) and Mounds Park Academy (6-1) to go with defeats against Lakeville South (6-1), Hastings (5-2) and Richfield (4-2) to its name. Individual statistics were not available.

Holy Angels Volleyball

The Holy Angels volleyball team opened its autumn with a 3-2 loss to visiting Bloomington Kennedy last Thursday. 

Kennedy outlasted the Stars in a back-and-forth match (19-25, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 7-15) to hang the loss on the hosts. Individual statistics were not available.

Richfield Girls Soccer

The Richfield girls soccer team fell 5-2 to visiting Metro United in its first game of the season last Friday. Individual results were not available.

Richfield Cross-Country

The —the De'Boom Invite—at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis on Saturday.

of the Spartans placed third in the girls varsity race.
