VIDEO: Gearing Up for 'Grease' at Richfield High School

RHS students will perform the popular musical, "Grease" in the school auditorium from April 14-17.

When the school day finishes at (RHS), a cast of 36 young thespians makes its way to the auditorium to rehearse one of the most well-known musicals of all-time.

"It's 'Grease.' Everyone knows 'Grease,'" said Kyle Maceachern, a Richfield junior.

The classic story of two young lovers in a 1950s high school takes center stage this year.

"It just felt like the right show and the right fit for the students that we have involved in the [theater] department at this time," said Julie Magnuson, RHS theater director.

The students performing in this adaptation of "Grease" said they couldn't be more excited.

"It's a fun show for everybody," said Stephanie Burt, a Richfield senior.

Burt plays the role of "Jan," one of "The Pink Ladies." Spend just a few minutes watching her, and the rest of the cast, go over dances and songs with the choreographer and their enthusiasm becomes apparent.

"Everybody's memorized [their lines]," Burt said. "The last show I was in, we were not memorized for a long time, and dancing and singing is really fun."

Yet, some of the students admit that since "Grease" has so many familiar songs and scenes that it adds more pressure to perform well.

"It does, of course, add pressure because you really need to know what you're doing," Maceachern said.

"Since we're doing "Grease" we feel we should live up to a certain level," Burt added.

This version of "Grease," however, will be a little different from what people remember from the film.

"The stage version actually came out first," Magnuson said. "So it's a little bit different from the movie, but we're trying to bring in elements of both and then give it our own twist."

With opening night scheduled for April 14, the cast and crew hope the twist to which she's referring—and the familiarity of "Grease"—is enough to entice people to see the show and fill the auditorium.

"Everybody's just gonna want to sing and dance along," Burt said. "So I think it's just a good show for everyone."
