UPDATED: January Looks for Third Hurdles Title At State

While sophomore Obsa Ali competes in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs this weekend.

Two runners are heading to the state track meet this weekend, one defending a title and the other hoping for another first place finishes.

Jessica January: 100 meter hurdles

Junior is the as well as the state record holder with a time of 14.33 seconds. She has been the reining champ for the last two years, setting the record as a freshman. *January will compete in the priliminary round Friday and the finals are at 9:55 a.m. Saturday.

Obsa Ali: 3200 meter run and 1600 meter run

Sophomore will compete against a handful of other runners in the 3200 meter run finals at 9:20 a.m. Friday. Ali qualified for the race after winning the Section 3AA Finals race on May 29 with a time of 9:18:87. *He will also run in the 1600 meter at 10:58 a.m. Saturday.

The state meet is being held at Hamline University in St. Paul. Race times and runner assignments for all schools are attached to this article as PDFs. We've also compiled a few photos (in the box above) of the runners in action.

Obsa update from Down The Backstretch: Class AA Boys' 3200m ... Wayzata's Josh Thorson won a comprehensive vivtory in 9:06.07. He led from the second lap onward and won by more than 12-seconds. Obsa Ali of Richfield was the runner-up (9:18.25) with Wayde Hall of Stillwater third (9:19.68). Jess January update from Down the Backstretch:Jessica January of Richfield just bettered her All-Time State Meet record in the 100m hurdles, running 14.32. (For those of you playing Yes/No ... that's record #1!) Way to represent Richfield Obsa and Jess!!
