Idea: Tunnel from Richfield under Hwy. 77 to MSP Airport
The concept has the attention of city officials, KSTP-TV and the Sun Current reported.
Richfield's southeast corner could come alive if a tunnel were built under Hwy. 77 connecting the city to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
That idea has appeal to city officials who have started showing potential redevelopment sites to developers, the Sun Current reported.
Properties there are now are home to Motel 6, apartment buildings and offices, KSTP-TV reported, but "when the economy starts to come back, it's going to be of interest to somebody [for redevelopment[," Tim Carter, co-chair of the Economic Development Committee with the Richfield Chamber of Commerce told the station.
The $25 million tunnel project would bring life to a "dead" area at the northwest corner of Hwy. 77 and I-494, reported the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, citing Finance & Commerce.
