UPDATE: Richfield Fire Department Says Cigarettes Caused Weekend Garage Fire

The fire that destroyed a three-car garage Saturday was most likely caused by cigarettes.

The on Saturday night was most likely caused by "improper disposal of cigarettes," according to Wayne Kewitsch, assistant fire chief in the .

The fire began in the corner of the garage, adjacent to the home, after a cigarette or another smoking product was disgarded without being completely put out, he told Patch.

Fortunately the family was able to escape with no injury and firefighters were able to contain the fire before it spread to the house or the neighboring home.

 “The guys got there really fast. They did a heck of a job," Kewitsch said. "There was just a little bit of fire that got inside the house ... [and] the damage in the house was minimal compared to what it could’ve been."
