North Woods Success Story
Deerwood Technologies has experienced many ups and downs since it was founded 13 years ago by Jim Mayne.
Mayne’s computer-services firm, based in Deerwood, about 20 miles northeast of Brainerd, was struggling financially when an accountant referred him to DEED’s North Central Small Business Development Center. Going to the center for guidance turned out to be one of the smartest moves Mayne ever made.
“Our SBDC consultant, Julie Anderholm, helped us develop realistic cash flow projections so we could better manage our business,” Mayne said.

With SBDC assistance, Deerwood Technologies obtained the financing it needed to purchase a building for the business in 2011 and make repairs and improvements. The company has since added a new division that provides telecommunications services and expanded its consulting services for security, compliance and business processes.
Anderholm described Mayne as the perfect client. “He asks the right questions and is willing to consider any suggestions. He is well informed on the current trends of his industry and uses this information to help him make good business decisions,” she said.

As result, a business that started as a part-time venture with local customers is today serving small- and medium-sized clients throughout the Upper Midwest.
Deerwood Technologies was just one of the small businesses served by the Brainerd-based North Central Small Business Development Center last year. The center worked with nearly 420 entrepreneurs and small businesses in the region, helping to create or retain almost 1,400 jobs.
