City Council to Hear Holy Angels Development Proposal

The school is considering an offer that would redevelop part of its front lawn.

The Richfield City Council will meet with Academy of Holy Angels officials Tuesday night in a special work session dedicated to the private school's campus master plan.

In October, Holy Angels announced that it was considering an offer to sell a portion of its front lawn to a developer interested in constructing a retail center.

School officials believe the sale would allow the institution to start an endowment fund, help pay down some of the $10 million in debt its accrued and make some needed campus improvements. However, the proposal has gotten mixed reviews from the community, especially alumni.

The proposed retail center would house two to three retail tenants, with potential tenants being that of a coffee shop, frozen yogurt shop, a bank or a drugstore.

If the project was to move forward, the city council would eventually have to rezone the Holy Angels property. Tuesday night's meeting is the first discussion.
