The family of Andrew Engeldinger, who was confirmed as the gunman in a deadly shooting incident in Minneapolis Thursday, said that he had suffered from mental illness for years in a statement Friday.

"Our hearts go out to the families of the people killed and those who were wounded in this tragedy. Nothing we can say can make up for their loss," the family said. "Our son struggled for years with mental illness. In the last few years, he no longer had contact with us. This is not an excuse for his actions, but sadly, may be a partial explanation."

The man police say is responsible for Thursday's deadly shooting at a Minneapolis business was recently identified as a Richfield native, according to The Associated Press.

During a press conference at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan confirmed that the shooter was Andrew Engeldinger of Minneapolis, and that the man had been released from his job at Accent Signage Systems earlier that day.

Prior to the press conference, the AP reportedly spoke to Andrew Engeldinger's uncle, Joe Engeldinger, who said his nephew had worked at the company and grew up in Richfield.

The AP article, which has been run by local and national media outlets, features a 1994 high school photo of Andew Engeldinger from the Academy of Holy Angels.

According to Dolan, Andrew Engeldinger gained access to the Accent Signage Systems building via a loading dock, and was "selective" about who he shot and where.

"It's clear he passed people by," Dolan said during the press conference.

The chief also confirmed that Andrew Engeldinger was met with resistance from an employee, but did not elaborate. He was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the basement of the business.
