Richfield Kite Festival Set For Saturday

Kids will get a kite, snack and hear a little story.

Richfield's Kite Festival is back for another year at Augsburg Park. Kids and families of all ages can enjoy a morning of flying kites, eating snacks and hearing a story about the flying wonders from Librarian Phuoc Tran. The fun begins at 10:30 a.m. at the park and is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by Friends of Augsburg Park Library in collaboration with Richfield Public Safety, the Joint Community Police Partnership and the Richfield Police Multicultural Advisory Committee. Hennepin County Libraries to Remain Closed on More Holidays in 2012

The scoop on what's happening in Hennepin County.

Editor's Note: The following was taken from a Hennepin County Sixth District newsletter. Based on usage levels over the past several years during Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, and Veterans Day, Hennepin County Libraries will now be closed on these three holidays in 2012. Hennepin County Libraries Announce Most Popular Books

The top books adult, teen and childrens books that have been checked out.

Hennepin County Libraries recently released a list of the top 25 most popular adults, teens and children book titles that are being checked out throughout the library system. Five Things: Portion of Nicollet Avenue Closes Monday

Five things you need to know today.

1) Reminder: Nicollet Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction from 60th to 63rd Street beginning Monday. 2) The Minnesota State Fair kicks-off this week and we're looking for "Fair Fanatics." E-mail caitlin.burgess@patch.com if you think you fit that description. 3) The Richfield Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Richfield City Hall and Municpal Center. 4) Augsburg Park Library is once again hosting its Cuentos y Canciones: World Language Storytime at 6:30 p.m. Monday where children can listen to stories and music in Spanish. 5) The City of Richfield is still registering residents for its Citizens Academy until Sept. 7, 2011.

Five things you should know today.

1) Augsburg Park Library is holding a Teen Grab Bag event from 1-3 p.m. Thursday. Teens in Grade 6 and up can come to this free event at the library and make paperback wallets, graphic stationary and more. For more information, call 612-543-6200. 2) The Minnesota School of Business Richfield campus is holding a "Panel on Set" where media professionals will talk about intellectual properties, copyrights and licensing from 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Five Things: Transportation Commission to Meet; Augsburg Park Library Hosts Reading Event

Five things you should know today.

1) The Richfield Transportation Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Richfield City Hall and Municpal Center. 2) Augsburg Park Library is hosting Read-A-Story Theater at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Local seniors read to and entertain kids entering preschool through second-grade. 3) Reminder: There is no smoking permitted in any Richfield parks. Five Things: Kensington Park Waits for Word of Lender's Offer Acceptance

Five things you need to know today.

1) Kensington Park is in foreclosure. Owner and Developer Colleen Carey has been working with the lender to bring in another investor to settle up at a reduced rate, but there is no word on the lender's acceptance of the offer. Stay tuned for more. 2) The Augsburg Park Library is hosting an event where kids read a book and then watch the movie version made about it. This week teens entering seventh-grade and up are reading J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring." 3) Richfield Patch has a special area on the site to help readers find local volunteer opportunities or post an announcement looking for volunteers. PHOTOS: Wind and Sun Make for a Picture Perfect Kite Festival

Dozens of children of all ages along with their parents gathered at Augsburg Park Public Library Saturday for a Kite Festival.

Librarian Phouc Tran from the Augsburg Park Library knows how to captivate an audience and a lot about the history of kites. Saturday morning she explained the story of how kites were invented to a class of all ages held at the library. Through her sounds and animated gestures, she held the attention of everyone in the the classroom. Following this story of the history of kites by Tran, everyone got to assemble their own kite with high hopes that the weather would cooperate enough to allow everyone to go outside into Augsburg Park to actually fly them.
