One person in Richfield had to be rescued in 4:30 a.m. incident.
Updated at: 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 While the spring snow fell on much of the metro area this morning, local firefighters were fighting a home fire caused by a tree falling onto a power line. According to Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, fire and police personnel reponded to a structure fire at 6444 Newton Ave. S. at around 4:30 a.m. One occupant was at the doorway when firefighters arrived, and the second was rescued from a back bedroom. "Personnel made a quick attack on the fire and were able to extinguish the fire before it extended beyond the basement," Kewitsch told Patch. Winter's last gasp is mucking up roads and some students' schedules.
Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield will start two hours late on Friday, April 20, 2013, according to KARE11.com, as Minnesota deals with a springtime winter storm. Commuters can expect a tough slog through the snow that has fallen along with rain, sleet and hail over the last 24 hours. Overnight, a snowplow truck caught fire and was fully engulfed on East River Road north of Fridley, according to a scanner report. Snow is expected to be heaviest after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The winter storm warning has been extended until 7 p.m. Thursday.
As forecasters predicted, Twin Cities residents awoke Wednesday to find a dusting of snow and ice on local roads, making for yet another messy springtime commute. Snow fell overnight on top of crusty ice, and it didn’t take long for crashes and spinouts to start. At 4:46 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation kicked off metro crash reports with a crash on Interstate 394, at Interstate 494 and Highway 12 in Minnetonka. Total snowfall was minimal and stopped before morning rush hour began in earnest, but weather will worsen Wednesday afternoon. Snow is likely after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. *The City of Richfield issued a snow emergency. All vehicles should be removed from the city roads. Police will issue tickets and tow if necessary. However, resident should also know the snow parking ban ordinance is in effect all winter until April 15. The ordinance requires that vehicles be removed from the streets after 2 inches of snow or more have fallen. As for neighboring towns, Bloomington and Minneapolis have declared snow emergencies. Packs of snow and ice on the road resulted in road incidents and travel delays.
The winter storm that hit Minnesota over the weekend brought over a foot of snow in some cities and dangerous road conditions. By the Monday morning commute, many major roads were in fair condition, but not perfect. Slippery and hardened snow packed areas led to morning road troubles and lengthy commutes, according to the Star Tribune. The evening commute should be better, WCCO reported, as the Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to clear the road. A powerful storm will continue to impact the region all day Sunday, with snowfall expected to become heavy at times during the day. A winter storm warning is in effect until midnight Sunday.

A total of anywhere from 9 to 15 inches is expected to fall on Richfield by the time all is said and done, with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen forecasting snowfall to wrap up Sunday evening. Power is down in several Richfield neighborhoods, reports Xcel Energy. The company's website shows that approximately two hundred people on the city's west side, between York and Penn avenues, are currently without power, while another 15 or more have lost power on the far southeast side of Richfield. Power failures were occurring throughout the night and into the morning as a result of last night's storm. Ice accruing on tree branches eventually downed power lines in areas across the metro. Residents should stay away from a fallen power line and alert Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-1999. Work crews were working to restore power throughout the night and into the morning. While the National Weather Service reduced its winter storm warning Tuesday to a winter storm advisory for most of the metro area, Richfield residents obviously aren't yet out of the winter storm woods. Expect area precipitation to alternate between freezing rain and a wintry mix Wednesday morning, with one to three inches of snow likely accumulating throughout the day. More winter-like weather anticipated for Tuesday and Wednesday.
After a light dusting of snow that quickly melted Saturday, the National Weather Service is predicting more snow and rain Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service website, there is an 80 percent chance of snow and rain after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with a snow accumulation of about a half an inch—with more snow possible in the evening. As for Wednesday, there is a 50 percent chance of precipitation, mostly before 1 p.m. Again, as it was on Saturday, temperature highs are expected to by in the low 40s both days so the snow many not stay long. An additional three to seven inches expected for Sunday evening.
Anywhere from 10-18 inches of snow is expected to fall Sunday in Richfield, according to the National Weather Service website. Saturday's Sunday forecast indicated that seven to 11 inches was expected to fall during the day, but now an additional three to seven inches is being predicted to fall in the evening with wind gusts up to 32 mph. Driving conditions are hazardous, as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is already tweeting about crashes throughout the metro area.
