The 2013–14 school year will be the last for the Classic Suburban, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Richfield is headed for the new Metro West Conference.
The vote was 8-0 Wednesday to disband the Classic Suburban Conference after the end of the 2013–14 school year, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported: Richfield, a lame-duck conference member, abstained. ... With Richfield headed to the Metro West Conference in 2014-15, each of the other eight schools has 90 days to find a new conference. Fourteen Richfield male athletes were up for the scholarship honor.
Richfield High School's 2013 Tom Spooner Award winner is Duncan Pederson. Thirteen other senior male athletes were nominated for the award, including: Kevin Krohn, Danny Opitz, Andrew Allen, Kory Lommen, Corban Halbur, Nate Luttenegger, Cameron Dearing, Andy Peterson, Deshawn Jones, Adam Aldrich, Chandler Arredondo, Raheim Hampton and Alex Mendele. Tom Spooner was a baseball player back in the late '50s and early 60's who died from Leukemia but was exemplary in his attitude on and off the field. In the minds of his family, friends and doctor, it was his fighting desire to play baseball. It was his determination in spite of unconquerable odds against the future. Tom was an outstanding player in the Babe Ruth league, and an inspiration for American youth! The Spooner Family, along with the Richfield Spartan Foundation have kept his legacy alive …

Two Richfield snowboarders placed among the Nation’s top competitors at this year’s USASA (United States Amateur Snowboard Association) national snowboard competition held at Copper Mountain, CO March 30st – April 5th. These riders are top competitor from Minnesota’s Upper Midwest Alt series, competing in multiple disciplines. They advanced to the National Championships where they left a mark on this year’s competition competing in Boardercross, Giant Slalom and Slalom. Competing for the Menehune Boys (10-11) division is Elija Yoho, placing 44th in Boardercross, 37th in Giant Slalom and 38th in Slalom. The Richfield basketball star will continue playing at the junior college next school year.
Richfield High School's Sierra Ford-Washington was presented with a national junior college letter of intent with North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA. Ford-Washington will go from being a Spartan to a Trojan next year as part of the NIACC women's basketball team. Ford-Washington was a huge part of the Richfield girls basketball team's run for state the last two seasons. The winning design was one of nearly 700 submitted.
Richfield resident Ben Peters was recently announced as the winner of the Milwaukee Brewers' Design a YOUniform Contest. As previously reported by Patch, nearly 700 entries were submitted and a panel of judges narrowed the designs down to three finalists, including Peters' design. The designs of Ron Verrecchio of Catonsville, MD and Nicholas Fout of Madison, WI were the other two finalists. The winning design was chosen by fans and Peters was announced as the winner in late January. Peters got to go Milwaukee's spring training game on March 22 against the Cubs where the uniforms were worn. The uniforms were also worn March 30 when the Brewers took on the Chicago White Sox. Jessica January was one of six girls nominated for the award.
One of Richfield High School's star female athletes, Jessica January, has been named as the 2013 Athena Scholarship Award recipient. The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department.
