Richfield Has 'Close Call' with May Storm That Decided to Dump Snow Elsewhere

Nearly a foot of snow will fall in places south and east of Richfield, according to the National Weather Service.

Richfield avoided the brunt of a rare May snowstorm overnight that the National Weather Service says will leave nearly 12 inches of snow in areas to the south and east, where a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect: Close call for the Twin Cities. A 30 mile wide heavy snow band continues to stream moisture northeast overnight. This snow band has seen very little movement over the past few hours and has produced widespread 4-8" snowfall amounts. UPDATED: Storm Shifts, But Richfield Still Looking at Hazardous Weather

Hennepin County is no longer in a winter storm warning.

Updated: 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 After a day of rain and snowflakes, Hennepin County is no longer in a winter storm warning. The warning was removed from the National Weather Service's outlook for Richfield Wednesday night. The warning was orginially in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday, with predictions of snow falling as 1–2 inches per hour. The storm appears to have shifted to the southeast, however, the rain is still expected to switch to snow again overnight. Forecast Worsens; 6–9 Inches of Snow Expected Wednesday Night

National Weather Service forecasters are calling for 6–9 inches of snow Wednesday night across the metro area, including Richfield.

UPDATE: Winter Storm Warning for Richfield Warns of 6–9 Inches of Snow Original post (Tuesday): Minnesota weather may have yet another surprise in store for Richfield residents. National Weather Service forecasters are calling for 2-4 inches of snow across the metro area on Wednesday night, with more than an inch possible on Thursday. The Twin Cities, including Richfield, will likely see rain beginning late Wednesday morning, according to the weather service. As temperatures fall into the 30s on Wednesday night, that rain may turn into snow. Additional snow is likely before 1 p.m. on Thursday, with rain following on Thursday afternoon. The high temperature on Thursday is expected to be near 43 degrees, according to forecasters.

UPDATED: Two Rescued from Fire Caused By Tree Falling on Power Line

One person in Richfield had to be rescued in 4:30 a.m. incident.

Updated at: 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 While the spring snow fell on much of the metro area this morning, local firefighters were fighting a home fire caused by a tree falling onto a power line. According to Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, fire and police personnel reponded to a structure fire at 6444 Newton Ave. S. at around 4:30 a.m. One occupant was at the doorway when firefighters arrived, and the second was rescued from a back bedroom. "Personnel made a quick attack on the fire and were able to extinguish the fire before it extended beyond the basement," Kewitsch told Patch. "Both occupants were transported to HCMC via Hennepin EMS for smoke inhalation." The fire was caused by a large branch falling from a tree in the …

April's Fool: Another Half Foot of Snow Expected in Richfield

The National Weather Service in Chanahassen has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of East and Central Minnesota, including the Twin Cities. The storm will hit Thursday night into Friday morning.

At this point, we may all be April's fools. The second major snowfall in a little more than a week is expected to slam into the Twin Cities area Thursday night and drop up to six inches of fresh snow on Richfield by Friday morning, marking the second straight Friday residents here will wake up to white.  While last Thursday's snow totals came in under forecasted amounts, this storm is packing some moisture with it, and the Twin Cities area should see snow beginning Thursday night and extending into Friday.  That should create yet another messy, miserable commute for Friday morning as well. Snow, Ice Kick off Springtime Winter Storm

Snow is expected to be heaviest after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The winter storm warning has been extended until 7 p.m. Thursday.

As forecasters predicted, Twin Cities residents awoke Wednesday to find a dusting of snow and ice on local roads, making for yet another messy springtime commute. Snow fell overnight on top of crusty ice, and it didn’t take long for crashes and spinouts to start. At 4:46 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation kicked off metro crash reports with a crash on Interstate 394, at Interstate 494 and Highway 12 in Minnetonka. Total snowfall was minimal and stopped before morning rush hour began in earnest, but weather will worsen Wednesday afternoon. Snow is likely after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Weather Service Declares Winter Storm Warning for Metro

Snow will start following in earnest Wednesday night.

(Updated 8:14 a.m. April 9 to show that the National Weather Service had upgraded the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning.) *** The Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service on Tuesday declared a winter storm warning for much of west central and central Minnesota, including Hennepin and Anoka counties. A winter storm warning means “significant amounts of snow, sleet are ice are expected or occuring.” The warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday Some parts of the west central Minnesota could see six to 12 inches of snow fall between Tuesday morning and Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
