Six Richfield senior female athletes have been nominated for the honor.
The nominees for the 2013 Richfield High School Athena Scholarship Award are: The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department. Richfield will announce the winner at the end of this week. The winner is invited to attend the 41st awards luncheon on Friday, May 3 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Richfield Patch congratulates all the nominees.

The dance craze has made it to Richfield.
Like many young people across the county, Richfield Middle School students have been infected with the "Harlem Shake" bug. Students performed the new craze at the school's spring dance last week. The Harlem shake trend all started with a YouTube video produced by jokester “Filthy Frank” on Feb. 2. The 36-second film includes four individuals dressed up in costume, dancing to DJ Baauer's song “Harlem Shake.” Richfield High School Fire 'N' Ice King candidates also out on a Harlem Shake dancing display during the coronation ceremony last month. A handful of other swimmers received local recognition from their team and coaches.
Richfield's Andy Peterson and Duncan Pederson were recently nominated for swimming and diving's Athlete of the Year award by the Minnesota Swim Coaches Association. According to Marc Hamren, head coach of the boys swim team, this is a major award in the high school swimming community. The following short biographys were sent to the coaches association by Hamren: Andy capped off his six year Richfield swimming career with a stellar senior season. Not a club swimmer, Andy takes most of the season to get in shape, then tapers like crazy. At state he was 2nd in the 200 IM, lowering the Spartan varsity record to 1:55.68. In addition, he already holds Richfield's back stroke record of 55.35 (set as a junior), and is part of each of our relay …

Despite an unexpected loss to Red Wing Thursday, the Richfield High School girls basketball team brought its best to the court Saturday to snag the Class AAA third place title at the state tournament. The Lady Spartans took on Monticello High School at Concordia College Saturday afternoon, winning the matchup 64-39. The team's unfortunate loss to Red Wing in the semifinals, sent the Wingers to the finals to compete against defending champs DeLaSalle. Red Wing lost 65-50. Richfield's run for state champions ended Thursday afternoon.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team fell to the Red Wing Wingers in an state tournament semifinals upset Thursday afternoon. Richfield, seeded No. 1 going into the tournament, was trumped 61-59, ending their run for state champions. Richfield beat Red Wing in the first round of the 2012 tournament. In addition, Richfield senior, and one of the team's top scorers, Sierra Ford-Washington suffered a knee injury early in the game that put her out of commission for the rest of the matchup. To add to Richfield's troubles, Jessica January and Kyla Adams, the other top scorers, were both benched in the first half with three fouls each. Richfield defeated Hill-Murray in the quarterfinals Wednesday to advance to the next round of play.
After defeating Hill-Murray in the first round of Class AAA state tournament play, the Richfield High School girls basketball team will take on Red Wing in the semifinals at noon Thursday at Target Center. The Lady Spartans easily beat the Pioneers 54-35 at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena Wedneday morning. As many may recall, Richfield opened last year's tournament against Red Wing, which ended in a 68-53 victory for the Spartans. Also making it to the semi-final round is Minneapolis's DeLaSalle. Richfield lost to DeLaSalle in the final tournament game last season. *DeLaSalle's plays Monticello at 2 p.m. Thursday at Target Center. This is the second consecutive trip to state for the Lady Spartans.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team beat out Hill-Murray School in the first round of the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament Class AAA with a 54-35 win. The Lady Spartans led out of the gate and never looked back. At halftime, the team was up 30-17. Seniors Jessica January and Sierra Ford-Washington put up 19 and 13 points, respectively. This is the second consecutive year, and second year overall, that Richfield made it to the state tournament. Hill-Murray made its fourth consecutive and 13th overall tournament appearance. The Spartans girls basketball team is headed to state for the second year in a row.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team will begin its bid for state champions against Hill-Murray School Wednesday morning. The Lady Spartans trounced Chaska High School 72-45 last Thursday to ensure a trip to state, as well as the section 3AAA champions title. The team is heading to state for the second consecutive year, as well as the second time in school history. Last year, the team made it to the finals, where it fell to DeLaSalle. The game against Hill-Murray begins at 10 a.m. at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. The 2012-13 season has officially ended for the young men.
The Richfield High School boys basketball team is no longer in the race to state. The team narrowly lost to Blake High School 79-73 Saturday night. The Spartans defeated the Washburn Millers Tuesday night in its first section playoff game. Unfortuantely, Saturday's loss ends post-season play for the Spartans, with the team finishing 16-12-0 overall.
