Principal Encourages Families to Start Healthy Living Intiatives at Home

Richfield S.T.E.M. School will celebrate National Health and Physical Education Week later this month.

Editor's Note: The following was submitted by Richfield S.T.E.M. School principal Joey Page. National Health and Physical Education Week April 29th-May 3rd During the Health and PE Week celebration, the STEM Physical Education Department will continue to focus on an active and healthy lifestyle. To further promote these elements, we have invited some outside professionals to come and lead the students in a tennis lesson and Zumba class. Cathy Molinett a certified Zumba instructor and Richfield resident will be leading all students through a 30 min. “kids” zumba class. Also, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) will be introducing tennis to the K-2 students. Joan Hoerauf and Anna Hettler, PE teachers at STEM, will reinforce healthy …

S.T.E.M. Students to Begin MCA-III Testing Soon: Letter from Principal

Editor's Note: The following letter was posted on Richfield S.T.E.M. School's Facebook page. Dear Parent(s), In two weeks we will begin the MCA-III tests. All students in grades 3-5 are required to take these tests as part of federal law. All students will be tested in the areas of reading and mathematics. Students in fifth grade are assessed in science, too. The results of these assessments are tremendously important at our school. April 17-18 MCA Reading (Gr. 3 – 5) April 19, 22 MCA Reading Make-up April 24-25 MCA Math (Gr. 3 – 5) April 26, 29 MCA Reading Make-up May begins MCA Science (Grade 5) Each day, we will begin testing at approximately 8:00 a.m. These tests are untimed, but most students finish in about 90 minutes. Jeff Running: ‘I Wanted to Work With Kids and Learn From Other Teachers’

Editor's Note: Gov. Mark Dayton declared Jan. 16-20 as Paraprofessional Recognition Week. All this week, Richfield Patch is featuring a series of articles on paraprofessionals within Richfield schools—all suggested by school administrators, teachers, staff members and parents. After heading to the University of North Dakota as a business major in the fall of 2004, Jeff Running found the field wasn’t for him and that he needed to regroup. “I started thinking about all the positive experiences that I had as a student growing up and all the teachers that had a great impact on me,” Running told Richfield Patch. “And I thought, ‘Yeah. Richfield Student Places First in Minnesota State Fair Photography Competition

The results of the annual Minnesota State Fair Education Competition are in.

Sheridan Hills Elementary School first-grader Ashley Montano took home first place in the Minnesota State Fair Education Competition's Grade 1 individual exhibit for photography. Back to School: Richfield S.T.E.M. School Supply Lists

School supply list for the 2011-12 school year.

The school supply shopping season has begun. Richfield S.T.E.M. School, along with all other Richfield Public Schools, has posted its supply requirements for school students for the 2011-12 school year. The following is a list of items that all S.T.E.M. students will need to have at the start of the school year: 9 ¾ x 7 ½ wide ruled 100 pages) Additional supplies needed at home are: For questions, call the school at 612-798-6600.

PHOTOS: MSB-Richfield Staff Vounteer at Richfield Public Schools, Hope Church

Minnesota School of Business staff volunteer throughout the community.

More than 100 Minnesota School of Business (MSB) Richfield campus staff and falculty vounteered throughout Richfield for the school's annual Community Service Day Friday. MSB-Richfield teamed up with Globe Unversity's online division to send its staff into a handful of Richfield elementary schools, Partnership Academy, Wood Lake Nature Center and Hope Presbyterian Church. Volunteers did everything from gardening to shelving books. MSB and Globe Unversity campuses across the Midwest closed their doors to get their staff and faculty out and volunteer in the communities they serve.

VIDEO: Richfield's Melanie Lawrence-Smith Honored as Top Teacher

Richfield S.T.E.M. School teacher Melanie Lawrence-Smith was surprised by Fox 9 News with its Top Teacher of the Year Award Thursday morning.

Richfield S.T.E.M. School teachers, staff and students gathered in the school's cafeteria Thursday morning for a special announcement from Principal Joey Page. Staff members joked that the announcement was about the Dairy Queen Dilly Bars that had mysteriously disappeared from the teacher's lounge. However, Page said that while he had called for the meeting, he would not be making the secret announcement. As he finished his sentence, Fox 9 News morning anchor Dawn Stevens, along with a camera man, came out and announced they were there to present a Top Teacher of the Year Award to a special teacher. Stevens told the audience that more than 500 nominations had been submitted and of those they had chosen just nine teachers to recognize. Soon…

Richfield School Board Discusses 'Choice' Program

The Richfield School District discusses The Choice is Yours Program and its affect on Minneapolis schools.

It's been 11 years since Minnesota began The Choice is Yours program, which allows Minneapolis families that qualify for free or reduced-price lunches to enroll their child in public schools outside of their resident district. Yet due to changes in student demographics of participating districts and changes within the program since its start, organizers of The Choice is Yours are discussing possible revisions, including whether to continue the program in districts like Richfield, which currently has about 80 Minneapolis students enrolled. At the April 18 regular meeting of the Richfield School Board, the board discussed district participation in the program and whether or not it would take a position with the Joint Powers Board of the West…
