Report: Schools Vote to Pull Plug on Classic Suburban Conference

The 2013–14 school year will be the last for the Classic Suburban, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Richfield is headed for the new Metro West Conference.

  The vote was 8-0 Wednesday to disband the Classic Suburban Conference after the end of the 2013–14 school year, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported: Richfield, a lame-duck conference member, abstained. ... With Richfield headed to the Metro West Conference in 2014-15, each of the other eight schools has 90 days to find a new conference. Richfield Names 2013 Tom Spooner Award Recipient

Fourteen Richfield male athletes were up for the scholarship honor.

Richfield High School's 2013 Tom Spooner Award winner is Duncan Pederson. Thirteen other senior male athletes were nominated for the award, including: Kevin Krohn, Danny Opitz, Andrew Allen, Kory Lommen, Corban Halbur, Nate Luttenegger, Cameron Dearing, Andy Peterson, Deshawn Jones, Adam Aldrich, Chandler Arredondo, Raheim Hampton and Alex Mendele. According to the district's website: The Tom Spooner Award is given annually by our school to the Best Male Student-Athlete at Richfield as chosen by our Head Coaches.  Tom Spooner was a baseball player back in the late '50s and early 60's who died from Leukemia but was exemplary in his attitude on and off the field. The nominees for the 2013 Richfield High School Tom Spooner Award are: According to the district's website: The Tom Spooner Award is given annually by our school to the Best Male Student-Athlete at Richfield as chosen by our Head Coaches.  Tom Spooner was a baseball player back in the late '50s and early 60's who died from Leukemia but was exemplary in his attitude on and off the field. In the minds of his family, friends and doctor, it was his fighting desire to play baseball. It was his determination in spite of unconquerable odds against the future. Tom was an outstanding player in the Babe Ruth league, and an inspiration for American youth! The Spooner Family, along with the Richfield Spartan Foundation have kept his legacy alive …

Richfield Educator Up for Let's Dish Teacher of the Year Award

Kim Daraitis is in the running for the annual award.

Richfield High School special education teacher Kim Daraitis has been nominated for the Let's Dish Teacher of the Year award. Let's Dish has six locations in Minnesota, where customers can come and prepare meals to freeze and eat at home. A winning teacher will be selected for each of Let's Dish's Minnesota locations. The top vote-getters will receive eight meal sessions at Let’s Dish. The following is Daraitis' nomination on the Let's Dish voting page: The Let’s Dish program allows community members to nominate a deserving teacher. Then, residents vote for their favorite teacher online. In 2012, according to Let’s Dish, 260 teachers were nominated and 14,000 people voted. Richfield High French Students Achieve Honors in National Contest

The National French Contest is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.

A handful of Richfield High School French students acheived honors in the National French Contest. The National French Contest, or Le Grand Concours, is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, according to the contest's website. Students of French in Grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes. Teacher Margaret Laboe said the exam tests students' French skills in listening, grammar, vocabulary and reading.
