Football Playoff Preview: Richfield vs. Washburn

RIchfield travels to Washburn in playoff action Tuesday.

Richfield travels to Tartan for Classic Suburban Conference tilt, while Holy Angels goes to Northfield.

Classic Suburban Conference: Richfield High School Spartans (1-5, 1-4) at Tartan High School Titans (3-3, 2-3) Missota Conference: Academy of Holy Angels Stars (5-1, 4-1) at Northfield High School Raiders (2-4, 1-4) Both teams are on the road this week. Richfield travels to Spring Lake Park for a key non-conference contest Friday, while Holy Angels hopes to stay undefeated in its Homecoming game.

FOOTBALL FRIDAY Richfield High School Spartans (1-3, 1-30 vs. Spring Lake Park Panthers (3-1, 3-1) Academy of Holy Angels Stars (4-0, 3-0 Missota Conference) vs. Farmington Tigers (1-3, 1-2 Missota Conference) Both games will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Richfield is on the road, while Holy Angels is hosting Farmington at home for its Homecoming game. Richfield High School officially inaugrated its new artificial turf field on Thursday in the proper way as the Spartans football team fought off visiting North St. Paul, 27-13, in the season opener on Thursday night. Senior wide receiver Erik Jimson scored the first touchdown on his team's new playing surface to help give the hosts a 7-0 lead early in the second half. North tied the score before halftime, however, and the two teams entered the second half knotted at 7-7. The Spartans took the lead for good on a 59-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Corban Halbur to Jimson in the third quarter before the Polars nearly tied the score on a long touchdown play of their own. Classic Suburban Conference Football Outlook: Can Richfield Hold its Own?

Richfield is going up against St. Thomas Academy, Mahtomedi and South St. Paul, who have a combined 31 wins for last season.

Richfield—The Spartans ended the 2010 season with eight straight losses after winning their season-opener against North St. Paul. Richfield hopes to improve an offense that scored 7.4 points per game a year ago. They must replace quarterback Jared Etienne and running back Daron Garvis. However, they return Deshawn Jones, who was the team’s top receiver as a junior. St. Thomas Academy—The Cadets are 37-3 over the past five regular seasons, including back-to-back undefeated years. They have shared the past three Classic Suburban Conference titles. Mahtomedi—The four-time defending Section 4AAAA champions are seeking another trip to state.
