Richfield Firefighters Help Save Downed Paramedic

Richfield firefighters worked quickly to assist a paramedic who went into cardiac arrest during a call last December.

Four Richfield firefighters were honored Tuesday by Hennepin County Medical Center for their efforts to save an HCMC paramedic during a heart attack. Capt. David Quebodeaux, and firefighters Steve Paszkiewicz, Chuck Russell and Joe Halaska were given commendations for their actions during Tuesday night's city council meeting. According to Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, Richfield firefighters and police officers were dispatched to Motel 6 on a medical call in December 2012. After the patient was loaded into the ambulance, paramedic Wayne Schneider went into cardiac arrest. Richfield Firefighters Help With Beeks Fire

The pizza restaurant near 54th and Lyndale burned Thursday night, as did Diamond Lake Rental.

Thrusday night, Beeks King of Pizza and Diamond Lake Rental met a sad end at the hands of a three-alarm fire. The businesses are located at 54th Street and Lyndale Avenue South in Minneapolis. Southwest Minneapolis residents captured the event—including some fantastic pictures—on Twitter. UPDATE: Unattended Stovetop Causes Richfield Kitchen Fire Monday

Firefighters arrived on site in less than four minutes.

Richfield firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at 11:13 a.m. Monday on the 6700 block of Elliott Avenue. According to Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, fire crews arrived in less than four minutes and discovered a fire on the stovetop in the kitchen of the home. The fire was extinguished and the home was ventilated. The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, which is the leading cause of residential fires in Minnesota, according to Kewitsch. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the stove and the equipment mounted above. There was extensive smoke damage to the kitchen, Kewitsch said. There were no injuries reported. Friends, Strangers Hit Fundraising Goal For Fire Victims

The Nelson/Walton family lost their home and pets in a house fire on Sept. 2.

With just a few hours left to make goal, strangers and friends contributed what they could to raise a total of $5,000 for Deb Nelson and her daughters, Tali and Mikayla Walton. The Nelson/Walton family was devastaed by a Sept. 2 house fire that killed two dogs, left the home in ruins and damaged neighboring residences. A relief fund was created by local Spencer Erickson in the immediate days following the incident with a $5,000 goal. The time-frame to raise to meet the goal was one month. Seventy-five donors contributed to the fund, hitting the goal Thursday morning with roughly 17 hours left. On Sept. 26, the fund was sitting at just $2,860. Relief Fund For Family Devasted By Fire Nears $3K In Donations

Dozens and dozens of people have donated to the Nelson/Walton family since their home was destroyed and their pets killed.

There's been no shortage in giving in recent weeks when it comes to helping a local family in need. As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, $2,860 has been raised by 70 donors through an online relief fund for Deb Nelson and her daughters, Tali and Mikayla Walton, who were devastated by a house fire Sept. 2. The fund, on Indiegogo.com, was created by local Spencer Erickson. The fire began in a garbage can near the detached garage and quickly spread to the home, damaging neighboring homes in the process. The home was a total loss and two family pets were killed. The Richfield Fire Department was unable to determine the cause of the fire. Editor's Note: The following letter was submitted to Richfield Patch by Deb Nelson. Dear Friends— My daughters and I have been overwhelmed with the support and encouragement we’ve received since our home was destroyed by fire on September 2. We’ve lived in our Richfield home for 20 years and would never consider living anywhere else, especially after this disaster when our neighbors, some of whom were strangers or mere acquaintances before, reached out immediately to console us and offer support. We are so lucky to live where we do. UPDATE: Dog Rescued From Sunday House Fire Dies

The dog had been resuscitated at the scene, however, it succumbed to its injuries Monday.

The fire that destroyed a home Sunday saw its second pet casuality Monday. A dog, that was rescued from the fire on Logan Avenue and resuscitated at the scene, died Monday after succumbing to injuries sustained in the fire, according to Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch. Bloomington firefighters resuscitated the dog Sunday afternoon using a special training and equipment from BART (Basic Animal Rescue Training), however, it appears the damage was already done. UPDATE: Fire Destroys Logan Avenue Home, Damages Another

While one pet died in the fire, one was revived and all human occupants made it out safe.

While one firefighter was treated for heat exposure, no other people were harmed in a major house fire that broke out on the 7500 block of Logan Avenue Sunday afternoon. The Richfield Fire Department received the call just before 3 p.m. Sunday with a report that three humans and two pets were possibly trapped in a home on Logan, which is near the Best Buy corporate headquarters and Richfield Middle School. According to KSTP, by the time firefighters arrived all humans had made it safely from the home, however, two dogs were still inside. Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch told press Sunday that one dog had been resuscitated while another died. UPDATED: Home Catches Fire on Logan Avenue

Multiple area fire departments responded to the blaze.

A home on the 7500 block of Logan Avenue was consumed by flames late Sunday afternoon. According to Police Clips and witnesses, the house was fully involved in fire. One dog was rescued, while another reportedly didn't make it. Richfield Patch contributor and resident David Haines was on the scene and reported there were no human injuries. However, one firefighter was being evaluated. Haines said Richfield Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch said the dog that survived was resuscitated by firefighter using CPR and was also given an IV.
