Popeyes Chicken Coming Soon to Richfield

The former KFC restaurant will soon become a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.

Popeyes, the second largest fried chicken chain in the country, acquired 14 bankrupt francise KFC locations in Minnesota—including Richfield's—this past November, despite KFC's attempts to keep them under its brand. A bankruptcy judge cleared the sale of the locations, even though KFC itself backed a higher bid for the Twin Cities restaurants, according to a Star Tribune article. The remodel of the Richfield location is underway. According to Kelsey Schmitt, a Popeyes communications specialist, the old KFC is being converted and will open in the near future. Popeyes to Take Over Richfield, Twin Cities KFC Restaurants

A bankrupt Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee is selling 14 metro area locations, according to the Star Tribune.

Popeyes, the nation's second larges fried chicken chain, is nipping at the heels of Kentucky Fried Chicken, the nation's largest chain, as it makes a major push to strengthen its presence in the Twin Cities. According to the Star Tribune, AFC Enterprises, Popeyes' Atlanta-based parent company, agreed to buy 14 Twin Cities KFC restaurants from a bankrupt KFC franchisee. The Richfield location at the HUB Shopping Center is one of the restaurants slated for sale. Other locations include those in Hopkins, Savage, Rosemount and Bloomington. Currently, Popeyes has just one Twin Cities restaurant location on Lake Street in Minneapolis near Uptown.
