Leon Henry Anderson Pleads Guilty to Brutal Richfield Murder

The horrific incident occurred on the 7300 block of Elliot Avenue on Feb. 28, 2012.

Leon Henry Anderson pleaded guilty to to the brutal murder of an elderly Richfield man and the attempted murder of the man’s wife, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office reported Thursday. As previously reported by Patch, Richard Webb, 79, was found dead in his Richfield home on the 7300 block of Elliot Avenue March 2, 2012. Investigators reported that Webb suffered many cuts and died of “complex homicidal violence.” His wife Toni Gail Jackson was also found in the home with her throat cut. However, she was not bleeding when police arrived and she was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. She survived the attack. The couple was orginally discovered by Jackson's sister, who then called police. The following is from the …

Justice for Some of the Youngest: County Attorney's Newsletter

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office releases its February 2013 newsletter.

Editor's Note: The following is a Hennepin County Attorney's Office press release. This month, we have had partial resolutions in two very difficult cases. In both instances, young people took up guns to solve their problems, killing other children. The crimes are almost incomprehensible, young boys shot while riding their bike or sleeping on the couch. And there are other victims, like Terrell Mayes, whose killer we still hope to bring to justice. These are some of the hardest cases for our office. It's our job to prosecute these crimes, but we also try to prevent violence from happening in the first place. That's one reason we are proposing some common sense gun violence prevention reforms at the legislature. It's also why, through our …

When Is a Death Considered ‘Murder?’

Two recent cases have emphasized the breadth of the legal definition. Patch wants to know what the word means to you.

“Murder” and “homicide” are loaded words that conjure images of malice and deliberate violence. This month, though, the west metro has been reminded that that’s not always the case. At the beginning of February, prosecutors charged Jonathan Markle with criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the drowning of his 9-month-old daughter. Prosecutors say Markle's blood alcohol level was .13 when his vehicle broke through the ice Jan. 18 after he tried to drive underneath the Halstead Bay Bridge on Lake Minnetonka. Hennepin County Mike Freeman acknowledged that the legal system has "no penalty that can approach the grief and agony this man might feel by the death of his daughter at his own hand." But Freeman went on to say he wants this …

Cold Case Solved, Officer-Involved Shooting & a New Chief: Richfield Police Year in Review

A look back at the crime and police happenings in 2012.

Richfield Patch covered a lot of different stories, topics and events throughout 2012, but there were a few that stood out as the most interesting, important or possibly infamous to our readers. As far as local law enforcement went, there was plenty that happened in the last year: After 36 years of service, Barry Fritz handed the Richfield Public Safety reigns to Todd Sandell in late March. Fritz held nearly every rank as a Richfield officer. Our coverage: In possibly one of the most disturbing tales in recent Richfield history, an elderly couple was attacked in their home Feb. 28 by a man who had done odd jobs around the house. The husband was killed and the wife badly wounded. Leon Henry Anderson, who was officially charged with murder …

Local Pastor Challenges Arguments Around 'God & Schools' After Newtown Shooting

Rev. Rolf Olson of Richfield Lutheran Church says the belief by some that the school shooting resulted from "taking God out of schools" is unfounded.

In the days following the horrific Newtown school tragedy, discussions of gun control and school security to mental illness and warning signs of a killer ran rampant across the country. Everyone was just trying to make sense of it all. Of course, God's role was also questioned. The following was written on the Facebook page of Golden Valley-based Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church by local pastor, Rev. Rolf Olson, of Richfield Evangelical Lutheran Church. He too knows the pain of having a child murdered and addresses arguments surrounding God in schools: THE TRAGEDY AND GOD In the days since the tragedy and evil that befell Newtown, I have heard and read comments about the event occurring because "they have taken God out of the schools…

Richfield Teen to Stand Trial As Adult For Death of Homeless Man

Andre Zedrick Steward Jr., 17, will stand trial as an adult in the beating death of a 50-year-old homeless man in Minneapolis earlier this summer.

A Richfield teenager arrested in July in connection with the beating death of a homeless man in North Minneapolis will stand trial as an adult on second-degree murder charges. Andre Zedrick Steward Jr., 17, is charged with aiding and abetting in second-degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison. He waived certification proceedings before a Hennepin County judge last week and was ordered to stand trial as an adult. Police say Steward and Willis Esposito Richardson, 23, of Minneapolis attacked 50-year-old Harry Lee Brown in North Minneapolis on June 29, with Richardson hitting Brown with a baseball bat and Steward punching the victim with his fists. The two stole $5 from Brown to buy liquor, according to authorities…
