Richfield defeated Hill-Murray in the quarterfinals Wednesday to advance to the next round of play.
After defeating Hill-Murray in the first round of Class AAA state tournament play, the Richfield High School girls basketball team will take on Red Wing in the semifinals at noon Thursday at Target Center. The Lady Spartans easily beat the Pioneers 54-35 at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena Wedneday morning. As many may recall, Richfield opened last year's tournament against Red Wing, which ended in a 68-53 victory for the Spartans. Also making it to the semi-final round is Minneapolis's DeLaSalle. Richfield lost to DeLaSalle in the final tournament game last season. *DeLaSalle's plays Monticello at 2 p.m. Thursday at Target Center. This is the second consecutive trip to state for the Lady Spartans.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team beat out Hill-Murray School in the first round of the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament Class AAA with a 54-35 win. The Lady Spartans led out of the gate and never looked back. At halftime, the team was up 30-17. Seniors Jessica January and Sierra Ford-Washington put up 19 and 13 points, respectively. This is the second consecutive year, and second year overall, that Richfield made it to the state tournament. Hill-Murray made its fourth consecutive and 13th overall tournament appearance. Richfield High School senior and standout basketball player Bryann Guyton signed a national letter of intent to commit to play for the the North Dakota State College of Science womens team next school year. Guyton, a 5-foot-10 forward, was a key leader in Richfield's second place finish in the Minnesota Class 3A State Tournament and was named to the Minneasota All-State Tournament team. The Centennial Elementary School principal and high school girls basketball coach reflects on the team’s run at state champs and looks forward to the future.
After taking the reigns six years ago, Richfield High School girls basketball head coach LeeAnn Wise has coached her team to four conference championships in five years. Wise sat down with Richfield Patch editor, and former third-grade student, Caitlin Burgess, to talk about the final tournament game and her thoughts on next season. Richfield makes it to the final round of the state tournament for the first time.
After a hard-fought battle against reigning champs DeLaSalle, the Richfield High School Spartans fell 65-45 in the Class AAA Championship game. Richfield had trouble getting use to playing at Target Center and the team’s failure to make free throws contributed to its demise. At the half, the Spartans trailed the Islanders 33-22, a lead that DeLaSalle would increase gradually as the second half went on. This is the second consecutive state championship title for DeLaSalle. While Richfield was unable to secure a victory, the community welcomed the team home at 9:30 p.m. with a celebration in the high school gymnasium.
