The Fifth District Report

Ellison Votes Against Raising Debt Ceiling

The Congressman's vote was also echoed by other Minnesota members of Congress ... on both sides of the aisle.

After a heated and divided campaign season, Republicans and Democrats from Minnesota found some common ground last week. Reps. Michele Bachmann (R) and Keith Ellison (D) both voted against increasing the government's debt ceiling for four months Jan. 23. DFLer Betty McCollum, who represents Minnesota's fourth congressional district, also voted against the measure. "Giving the president four months of unlimited borrowing authority without a cap on spending is something I cannot support," Bachmann reportedly said. According to the Star Tribune, debt deal proposed by House Speaker John Boehner leaves the $16.4 trillion ceiling where it is, but allows continued borrowing to take place until a new May 18 deadline. Despite the bipartisan …

After Fiscal Cliff Deal, Ellison Says the Work is Not Done

Richfield's representative and others in Congress from Minnesota reflect on the showdown's climax.

So-called fiscal cliff legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives, with divided, bipartisan support from Minnesota's delegation. How do you expect the 'Fiscal Cliff' bill to affect you? Leave a comment. Richfield's congressman, Keith Ellison, voted in favor of the package, as did the state's other DFLers—except Collin Peterson. Republican John Kline voted in favor but most in the House GOP did not. MinnPost rounded up some of what they said about their votes, along with Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken. What neither side is boasting about might be what you notice first: the end of the payroll tax holiday. Here is Ellison's full statement: “Today, I voted for an imperfect bill in order to prevent millions of working and middle …

Minnesota Viking Chris Kluwe, former Michele Bachmann Staffer Spar on Gay Marriage

The Minnesota Vikings punter and former Chief of Staff for Rep. Michele Bachmann exchanged barbs over the marriage amendment last night on Twitter.

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann chief of staff and Bachmann for President Campaign Chair Andy Parrish decided to take the "Chris Kluwe Challenge" and engage the Minnesota Vikings' punter on a virtual discussion about the so-called Gay Marriage amdenment issue.  The back-and-forth began after Twitter user @joshuajhovey tweeted some foul language at Andy Parrish, deputy campaign manager for Minnesota for Marriage, an organization that supports the passage of the Marriage Amendment Act. The act would amend the state's constitution to read that marriage is between one man and one woman. After the foul tweet, Parrish called on Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe to respond. Kluwe has been an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage in Minnesota.

Red Twin Cities: Republicans Backing Bachmann, Pawlenty

Despite her controversies, Patch's panel of Minnesota Republicans backs Michele Bachmann and likes her chances in the Sixth District.

Despite her penchant for controversial statements, Sixth District Rep. Michele Bachmann has the support of Minnesota Republicans.  In our second "Red Twin Cities" survey, three out of four Republicans said Bachmann, who has been embroiled in public battles with fellow Rep. Keith Ellison and with media types in the past, has their support.  And more than 90 percent of our respondents, a total of 54 Republicans from our "Red Twin Cities" panel, said her latest controversies will have no impact on her re-election hopes as she battles challenger Jim Graves of St. Cloud.  "Her district already knows her," said one survey responder, "so her eccentricity is already baked in the cake."  "The district is very Republican," said another. "She has a …
