Residents Step Up To The Pillsbury Commons Microphone

The Richfield Planning Commission held a public hearing regarding the proposed zoning changes for the affordable housing project.

Following a breezy presentation from Ron Clark Construction & Design, the Richfield Planning Commission opened the floodgates to a public hearing Tuesday night, allowing residents to express their concern or support for the Pillsbury Commons project. The following are snippets of what residents had to say: Bob Olson, 74th Street and Pillsbury Avenue resident: “I think Richfield needs to attract people that are upwardly mobile and not just focus on affordable housing. Richfield needs to look years ahead. Don’t let Mr. Clark’s proposal lead us in a direction that we don’t want to go. Please consider the ramifications.” Wendy Holland, 72nd Street and 17th Avenue resident: “I live extremely close to Old Cedar and if anyone wants to talk about …

Met Council: Public Transportation Services Will Run Normally During Minnesota Government Shutdown—For Now

Now that the government has officially shutdown, Richfield and other public transit riders won't have to make any changes to their commute, yet.

Good news for commuters: Riders of Metro Transit, the Hiawatha light rail line and the Northstar commuter rail can expect service to continue uninterrupted—though not indefinitely—now that the state government officially shutdown at 12:00 a.m. Friday. With Richfield being at the center of many major throughways and bus lines, many residents along with those of Bloomington, Minneapolis and Edina may rely daily on public transit services and any changes in service could cause some serious headaches. Other contracted services including Metro Mobility that are operated by the Metropolitan Council are also expected to run without interruption. "All transit service will continue operating as normal beyond the potential shutdown date,” said Metro…

Richfield Metro Sewer Project Causes More Road Closures

The Richfield Metro Sewer Project closes Lyndale Avenue lanes Monday, while other closures continue.

The Richfield Metro Sewer Project is in full-swing and road closures are expected throughout the summer. The pipeline serves the Richfield, Edina and Bloomington areas. As it was, the pipe was at capacity and with further anticipated expansion of the area, it needed to be replaced, said City Engineer Kristin Asher in a previous Patch interview. In 2010, the areas between Xerxes Avenue and Interstate 35W and the route between Cedar Avenue and 11th Avenue up to 74th Street were constructed. Now, contractors are working to install the remainder of the pipe along 76th Street, in between 12th Avenue and I-35W. Unfortunately, all the construction means road closures throughout the city. Nicollet Avenue is closed to through traffic at 76th Street…

Council Member Wroge Voices Concerns About Affordable Housing Push

The city council meets for the last time in November.

In an otherwise straightforward Tuesday night city council meeting, council member Fred Wroge expressed his concerns about some of the pressures Richfield is facing from the Metropolitan Council. While Wroge didn't go into much detail, he said the Metropolitan Council is pushing the city to create more affordable housing options, which may mean redeveloping a residential area. "We are affordable," he said. "I don't want to see our community have to tear down single-family houses to build high-rise condominiums or potentially tear down houses to build townhomes and stuff to make numbers that are probably artificially figured." The issue was raised when Steve Devich, city manager, asked council members to think about projects or issues they…

"So now we need to ask if TIF sheds some tax dollars to the school system. In all Ron Clark will only pay $3900. per year in taxes on the land for 30 years, what will the school get in cash for the next 30 years? The next question that should be asked is this, Kennisington Place on 76th and Lyndale was given $500K in up front TIF but now the courts have decided that Richfield was a second …   more ›
