Richfield may once again be home to a Taco Bell in the near future. The Richfield City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday regarding a conditional use permit and variances for the business to revamp the former Burger King building at 140 E. 78th St. Burger King closed its doors last year after a fruitless attempt to be included late in the redevelopment of the adjacent Menards property. Taco Bell had a Richfield location on 66th Street near Penn Avenue that closed, and is now occupied by Mediterranean restaurant Aida. The new Richfield Menards superstore opened its doors to the public bright and early Tuesday morning. The new two-story home improvement store replaced the former one-story store, as well as the former Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant. The property is roughly 10 acres in size. The new Richfield Menards superstore is set to open Tuesday, Feb. 12. The announcement was made Thursday morning. The new two-story home improvement store replaced the former one-story store, as well as the former Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant. The property is roughly 10 acres in size. “We are really excited to present this amazing new store to our friends in Richfield," Jeff Abbott, a Menards spokesperson, said in a press release. Crews have been working on the two-story superstore for months.
Despite its outward appearance, the new Richfield Menards is still a little ways from opening. According to Menards spokesperson Jeff Abbott, there is not an official opening date set for the store. All he could say was the company's plans to open sometime this winter or early spring were still in place. Despite attempts by the owners of the neighboring Burger King to stall the project, Menards got the final green light to redevelop its average, outdated store into a sprawling, two-story superstore in December 2011. At the start of the new year, the company began clearing the inventory and temporarily reassigning employees. To participate in the program, residents can bring a mercury-containing item to a Hennepin County drop-off facility for recycling.
Hennepin County and Covanta Energy Corporation are partnering to encourage residents to properly dispose of mercury-containing items and will reward them for doing so. Starting Oct. 2, residents who dispose of a mercury-containing item at a Hennepin County Drop-off Facility will receive a $5 Menards gift certificate from Covanta Energy as a thank you for helping to keep mercury out of the environment. Mercury in the environment is a concern because exposure to it can be harmful to humans and wildlife. Old mercury-containing items must not be placed in the trash and should be recycled instead.
