The Richfield basketball star will continue playing at the junior college next school year.
Richfield High School's Sierra Ford-Washington was presented with a national junior college letter of intent with North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA. Ford-Washington will go from being a Spartan to a Trojan next year as part of the NIACC women's basketball team. Ford-Washington was a huge part of the Richfield girls basketball team's run for state the last two seasons. One of Richfield High School's star female athletes, Jessica January, has been named as the 2013 Athena Scholarship Award recipient. The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department. Six Richfield senior female athletes have been nominated for the honor.
The nominees for the 2013 Richfield High School Athena Scholarship Award are: The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department. Richfield will announce the winner at the end of this week. The winner is invited to attend the 41st awards luncheon on Friday, May 3 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Richfield Patch congratulates all the nominees.

Despite an unexpected loss to Red Wing Thursday, the Richfield High School girls basketball team brought its best to the court Saturday to snag the Class AAA third place title at the state tournament. The Lady Spartans took on Monticello High School at Concordia College Saturday afternoon, winning the matchup 64-39. The team's unfortunate loss to Red Wing in the semifinals, sent the Wingers to the finals to compete against defending champs DeLaSalle. Red Wing lost 65-50. Richfield's run for state champions ended Thursday afternoon.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team fell to the Red Wing Wingers in an state tournament semifinals upset Thursday afternoon. Richfield, seeded No. 1 going into the tournament, was trumped 61-59, ending their run for state champions. Richfield beat Red Wing in the first round of the 2012 tournament. In addition, Richfield senior, and one of the team's top scorers, Sierra Ford-Washington suffered a knee injury early in the game that put her out of commission for the rest of the matchup. To add to Richfield's troubles, Jessica January and Kyla Adams, the other top scorers, were both benched in the first half with three fouls each. This is the second consecutive trip to state for the Lady Spartans.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team beat out Hill-Murray School in the first round of the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament Class AAA with a 54-35 win. The Lady Spartans led out of the gate and never looked back. At halftime, the team was up 30-17. Seniors Jessica January and Sierra Ford-Washington put up 19 and 13 points, respectively. This is the second consecutive year, and second year overall, that Richfield made it to the state tournament. Hill-Murray made its fourth consecutive and 13th overall tournament appearance. The team is hoping for another trip to state.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team is just one game away from another trip to state. The Spartans will take on the Chaska High School Hawks Thursday, March 7 in the section 6AAA championship game. The winning team will move on to the state championship series later this month. Richfield goes into Thursday's game with a 26-3-0 record (24-3-0 in the regular season), with stars Jessica January, Sierra Ford-Washington and Kyla Adams each averaging 23 or more points per game. Richfield nearly grabbed the state title last season, however, fell in the final championship game to DeLaSalle 65-4. The Richfield senior and basketball star signs a letter of intent to attend the college Wednesday morning.
Richfield High School senior and star athlete, Jessica January, committed to DePaul University Wednesday morning. January signed a national letter of intent to attend the school among family, friends and school staff. January told Patch earlier in the school year she wasn't sure what her major would be, but she was definitely playing basketball in college. She helped lead the Spartans girls basketball team to the state championship finals earlier in 2012. Besides basketball, January was also a member of the volleyball squad and runs track and field. Coronation was held in the Richfield High School gymnasium at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Richfield High School has a new queen. Hailey Lindblom was crowned as the 2012 Richfield Homecoming Queen in a coronation ceremony Thursday morning. Richfield's 2011 queen, Kiersti Phenow, did the honor in front of students, teachers, parents and friends. As the crown was placed on Lindblom's head she was overcome with excitement as tears rolled down her cheeks. She then honored the other nine candidates by crowning them as princesses. The other candidates were: Yaraily Castillo, Stephanie Chavez, Jessica January, Stephanie McGinness, Courtney Miller, Liliana Perez, Angela Peterson, Shannon Reid and Laurel Youngquist.
