City Hears More Redevelopment Proposals

Richfield's Weekly Review is back for another week.

The top story of the week for Richfield was the presentation made by Wellington Management Inc. to the Richfield City Council Tuesday night about potential plans for the vacant Kmart site. The plans included demolishing the existing building and starting fresh with three new buildings. LA Fitness and Goodwill were proposed for two of the building tenants, while the other would most likely be a casual dining restaurant. Many readers weighed in on the plans on Richfield Patch. PHOTOS: Holy Angels Girls Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

It was a tale of two halves as Stars lead 4-3 at halftime before losing by 11-4 score to visiting Cretin-Derham Hall.

It was a rough start to the season for the Holy Angels girls lacrosse team as the Stars dropped the opening game of their spring campaign by a score of 11-4 to Cretin-Derham Hall under the teflon sky of the StarDome on Thursday afternoon. The game was not without its highlights, as the Stars rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with four unanswered goals to take a double-up lead in the latter stages of the first half. Sophomore Mary Margaret Duffy recorded Holy Angels' first goal of the year and was followed on the scoresheet by classmate Jane Schumacher, freshman Cat Howell and senior co-captain Isabella Stewart. Stewart's strike put the Stars up 4-2, yet it would prove to be her team's final goal of the day.  Cretin logged the final tally …

Richfield Wrestlers Eliminated At State

Arredondo, Dyer fall in first round matches Friday.

The Richfield wrestling team sent two individuals to Friday’s Class AAA state meet at the Xcel Energy Center and both will be coming home empty handed. The Spartans’ Chandler Arredondo lost his lone match to Alexandria’s Andy Bouressa by fall at 4:47 in the 189-pound class. Bouressa lost his championship quarterfinal match, effectively eliminating Arredondo from contention. The same goes for Mike Dyer at 285 pounds. Dyer lost to Eagan’s Mitch Johnson 14-2 and was eliminated when Johnson lost his quarterfinal matchup. The Spartans were well represented at during the preliminary round of the state meet.

The Richfield boys swimming and diving team advanced several individuals and relays during the Class A preliminary round on Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Advancing swimmers will compete in the Class A championship or consolation heats on Saturday at noon.

PHOTOS: Richfield Spartans Top Stars in Girls Basketball Playoff Opener

Richfield cruises to quick 58-36 victory over visiting Holy Angels in Section 6AAA quarterfinals on Thursday night.

It took less than 75 minutes for Richfield girls basketball coach LeeAnn Wise to win her 100th game at the Spartans' helm as her squad cruised to a 58-36 win over neighboring Holy Angels in the opening game of the Section 6AAA playoffs Thursday night. Second-seeded Richfield led the No. 7 seed Stars from the start in the fast-moving contest that was more than midway through the first half as fans were still finding their seats.  The Spartans were not challenged on the night, taking a double-digit lead at 16-5 less than seven minutes into the game on a basket by Haley Lindblom, who also gave the hosts their first 15-point edge on a score 60 seconds later. PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Richfield Girls Basketball Team Receives $2K Check From Local Organizations

The Richfield Rotary and Richfield Optimist Club presented the Richfield girls basketball team with the proceeds from the Holiday Classic Tournament in December 2010.

The Richfield girls basketball team accepted at check for $2,000 from the Richfield Rotary and Richfield Optimist Club at its game on Feb. 18. The $2,000 came from the Holiday Classic Tournament the team hosted at Richfield High School in Decemeber 2010. The money will go into the girls basketball booster fund.

The Richfield and Holy Angels basketball teams came within a field goal of being perfect on Tuesday night with three of the four squads found success on the hardcourt against conference opponents as the regular season entered its final stretch. Holy Angels Boys Basketball: Stars 47, Northfield 44 The Holy Angels boys basketball team earned its first win of the season in Missota Conference play with a 47-44 defeat of visiting Northfield. Eight Stars players scored in all during the victory, led by 14 points from Nick Miller and 13 points from Damon Woods, as the contest remained tight throughout before the hosts held on for the triumph. Spartans Boys Hockey Team Tops Orioles in Overtime

Harris' goal in extra period give Richfield its first win in a month; Spartans hoopsters sweep Simley.

An overtime victory for the Richfield boys hockey team and a pair of wins for the Spartans basketball squads highlighted a busy weekend in athletics around the city. Richfield Boys Hockey: Spartans 5, St Louis Park 4 (OT) The goal at 2:39 by Tim Harris during the overtime period gave the Richfield boys hockey team its first victory in a month as the Spartans won at St. Louis Park, 5-4, to improve to 7-12-1 on the season. Mick Dhein scored twice in the game, with Tyler Klopp and Tyler Martinez joining Harris with one goal apiece. Joe McGuinness made 25 saves for the victory. Spartans Hoopsters Earn Saturday Wins

Richfield girls, boys basketball squads claim the only victories of weekend amongst local hockey, basketball clubs.

The Richfield boys and girls basketball teams claimed the two victories of the weekend for the local clubs on the rink or court as both prevailed in their respective non-conference contests on Saturday. Richfield Boys Basketball: Spartans 82, New Ulm 46 An 82-46 non-conference victory at New Ulm improved the Richfield boys basketball team's record to 12-5 on the season. Sean Bear led the Spartans with 16 points, while John Johnson scored 13 points in the victory — Richfield's second in as many nights. The Spartans return to Classic Suburban Conference play Friday at 7 p.m. against Simley. Richfield is 6-2 in the CSC, Simley is 1-6.
