The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has created a new Community Engagement Team to expand outreach efforts in diverse communities and directly address public safety concerns of the residents. The Community Engagement Team will enhance the community policing program that was launched several years ago. The team is comprised of three Sheriff’s Office personnel who will meet with community groups and provide public safety instruction. The following public safety summary of information from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Patrol Unit that includes highlights from Feb. 25 to March 3, 2013. In addition to the law enforcement services it provides throughout the county, the HCSO provides primary patrol services for the communities of Hassan Township, Greenfield, Medicine Lake and Fort Snelling, as well as the Hennepin County portions of Hanover and Rockford. The report was provided by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Not all incidents are included in the summary. The National Weather Service-Chanhassen is prediticting up to 8 inches of snow to fall overnight Sunday. A winter storm watch has been issued.
Yet another winter storm, the third in four weeks, is set to make its arrival in the Twin Cities area Sunday night, dropping heavy snow through Monday and bringing some windy conditions to make the morning commute difficult. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chanhassen has issued a winter storm watch for this yet-to-be-named system, which is coming across the Rockies Sunday and should drop its heaviest snow overnight Sunday into Monday. If we receive more than 2 inches of snow, a winter parking ban automatically goes into effect in Richfield. In both instances, young people took up guns to solve their problems, killing other children. The crimes are almost incomprehensible, young boys shot while riding their bike or sleeping on the couch. And there are other victims, like Terrell Mayes, whose killer we still hope to bring to justice. These are some of the hardest cases for our office. It's our job to prosecute these crimes, but we also try to prevent violence from happening in the first place. On Feb. 25, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the future site of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office 911 Emergency Communications Facility in Plymouth. The new facility will ensure uninterrupted service for 911 calls, radio dispatch, and technical services. To begin digging with ceremonial shovels, Sheriff Rich Stanek was joined by Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik, Hennepin County Administrator David Hough, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Carlson, and Hennepin County Commissioners Jan Callison and Linda Higgins Jeff Johnson. Washington, D.C., may be the hub of the federal workforce, but Minnesota has tens of thousands of federal employees and retirees who could be hurt by the looming sequestration crisis. If the president and Congress can’t strike a deal by Friday, a series of mandated federal budget cuts would automatically kick in. That would force more than a million federal employees to take unpaid leave, according to the Washington Post. Minnesota, alone, has about 59,000 federal employees and retirees. Hennepin County accounts for 16,780 of that total, or about 28 percent. Most of those are federal retirees or Veterans Affairs and Postal Service employees. Sheriff says building is not just a need but a critical need, predicts Hennepin County's emergency communications would be in jeopardy without it.
After committing more than $30 million to the project last December, a ceremonial groundbreaking Monday morning marked the start of meaningful construction on Hennepin County's new dispatch facility and emergency communications center. The building will be the most advanced of its kind in the upper Midwest, according to county officials, when it is completed sometime during the second half of 2014—with technological capabilities that will enable citizens anywhere in Hennepin County to text, e-mail and send video to emergency dispatchers in real time. The following was released by Hennepin County: The Counties Transit Improvement Board voted at its February meeting to support Gov. Mark Dayton’s proposed quarter-cent local sales tax increase for dedicated transit funding in the region. “Not only are we competing for scarce federal dollars to build transit investments like the Southwest Light Rail Line, we are also competing with other regions to attract companies and talent," said Counties Transit Improvement Board Chair Peter McLaughlin.
