A fourth quarter touchdown by someone not named Bridge led the Orioles to victory, while Minnetonka moved to 2-0 in impressive fashion. Plus, other scores from around the West Metro from Friday night.
The Minnetonka Skippers are serving notice that they're not to be counted out when it comes to the conversation about best teams in the West Metrol. The blue and white moved to 2-0, joining Wayzata and Eden Prairie, with a 49-14 trouncing of Coon Rapids. Ian Cote broke the game open with a couple of 1-yard plunges, and then the Skippers used big plays from their defense and the passing game to run away with a 42-0 halftime lead. Nick Rooney had three touchdowns for Minnetonka, two through the air. Osseo 26, Maple Grove 20 In the northwest corner, Osseo used a fourth quarter touchdown run from Troy Kray in the fourth quarter to come back from a 13-0 deficit in this Class 6A rivalry game. Edina Public Schools is apologizing for its accidental claim to the 1987 conference football championship that belongs to Richfield.
Edina Public Schools is apologizing for a scoreboard misprint that showed its high school football team was the 1987 Lake Blue Conference champion. In actuality, the title belongs to Richfield High School. A recent Patch article brought the error to light after a former member of the 1987 Richfield team captured the misprint in a photo and submitted it. The sign at Edina's Kuhlman Field mistakenly indicated the Hornets had won the conference title in '87. "We actually were not aware of the error until it was brought to our attention in your recent Patch article," Susan Brott, director of communications for Edina Public Schools, said in an e-mail to Patch. Since the article ran, Brott said the matter was looked into and the sign was indeed…

Former Richfield football players say the Hornets have mistakenly laid their hands on a 1987 conference title.
Follow Richfield Patch on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter Edina High School has a storied athletic history with 145 state championships. In 2005 Sports Illustrated even named the school’s athletic program the best in Minnesota and eighth best in the nation—the result of a survey conducted of some 30,000 U.S. high schools. The problem, several former Richfield Spartans varsity football players recently claimed, is that at least one of Edina High School’s claims to athletic glory doesn’t actually belong to the Hornets. On a billboard at Edina’s football field a sign lists 1987 as one of numerous years the Hornets won a conference football championship. But former Richfield High School football players, …

Edina hangs on to top Richfield in a battle of Top-3 ranked girls basketball teams from Class AAA, AAAA on Thursday night.
Not shying away from its share of top-notch competition this season, the Richfield High School girls basketball—ranked third in Class AAA—hosted Class AAAA's No. 2 rankee, Edina, in a non-conference border battle at RHS on Thursday night. The undefeated Hornets entered the Richfield gymnasium with a spotless 14-0 record, with wins over two ranked teams so far this season—having topped Hill-Murray (No. 5, AAA) and Lakeville North (No. 3, AAAA) in back-to-back games in December. Richfield, fielding one of the most talented collectives in team history, came into the night with a 12-2 overall mark, a nine-game winning streak, and wins over a trio of ranked teams that included Hill-Murray and Bloomington Kennedy (No. 4, AAAA). But on this night…

Steve Carroll's goaltender school begins 17th year at Richfield Ice Arena this week.
Richfield resident Steve Carroll has had his life enriched by being a hockey goaltender and his mission is to help children have the same opportunity. "I've had so many good memories being a goalie," he said. "I wanted to give back and help kids learn the art." Carroll, who has lived in Richfield since 1984, began goaltending as a boy after an Edina PeeWee hockey coach saw his skills in a floor hockey tournament and asked if he wanted to give goaltending for an ice hockey team a try. "Not sure if he was trying to tell me I wouldn't be any good at forward, or what," he joked. "But I made the team." From there, he helped his team win the state PeeWee championship. "What interested me in playing goalie was the challenge of keeping the puck …

Edina scores two goals in final minute to steal away a 5-4 victory in non-conference boys hockey matchup on Friday night.
With one minute to play, it appeared that the Holy Angels boys hockey team was clinging to a 4-3 lead over Edina in a scintillating non-conference battle at the Richfield Ice Arena on Friday night. Yet, 60 seconds and two goals later, the No. 2-ranked Hornets played the role of heartbreaker after rallying for a 5-4 victory against the 15th-ranked Stars. For most of the first 50 minutes of play, it appeared that Holy Angels would ring in 2011 with an impressive victory on its home ice as Stars goaltender Brett Pierce was thwarting Edina with save after spectacular save. With Pierce standing on his head, his Stars teammates were busy staking him to a 3-0 lead as two goals from forward Mario Bianchi and another from forward Joseph LaBate—who …

The "Hopkins" Patch leads with coverage of the Minnetonka team and only includes the HOPKINS team undefeated 3-0 record (including victories over a Texas team and highly ranked Champlin Park) as a foot note? That is not my definition of good coverage!   more ›
