Moms Talk: Choked up over the 'Choking Game'

How do we let our children gain their independence while still making sure they'll have tomorrow to learn from their mistakes?

Gone are the days of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey or even wondering if kids still play spin the bottle. On Thursday, Robbinsdale Schools called and emailed all middle school parents to tell us about the choking game. And yesterday, Dunwoody Patch, just outside Atlanta, reported that a 10-year-old boy there died from the choking game last week. This is not something I wanted to think about. I fear the thought of my children getting hurt by something they did themselves. And that got me thinking—how do we save our children from themselves? When kids are young, we have to watch them at all times. As demanding and exhausting as this is, you can usually say with great certainty that you know what they’re up to—then they become teenagers. My son was also exposed to the choking "GAME"... he was taught by a youth pastor on a missions trip. After researching it, since I had never heard of it before, I saw that kids died from it, or were in a vegetable state. We were even on national TV (Fox news) about it. Thefts, Assaults on Latest Richfield Public Safety Crime Report

The Richfield Public Safety Department releases its second of two weekly crime reports.

In comparison to the snowy weekend, the last few days seem to have been a bit busier for Richfield Public Safety Department officers. The department had a handful of assault incidents to deal with from Dec. 13-15. Some good news, too: No marijuana possessions were recorded, which are usually a recurring theme in the crime reports. Three DUIs in Richfield Public Safety's Incident Report

Three adults charged with DUI, while a juvenile is charged with assault.

It was a fairly quite weekend for Richfield Public Safety officers, however three DUIs accounted for a handful of reported incidents. All information was taken from the Richfield Public Safety Department's Incident Report from Dec. 13. The Richfield Public Safety Department's Narcotics Division is investigating an incident on the 7600 block of Cedar Avenue from Dec. 9. An adult was charged with DUI after being stopped on 12th Avenue and 68th Street on Dec. 10. Police are investigating a theft incident on the 1300 block of 66th Street from Dec. 10. Richfield's Weekly Review: Dec. 13

Richfield Patch, along with other Minnesota Patches, announces holiday contest, multiple city commission meetings take place and Police give tips on how to avoid being scammed. All this and whatever else you may have missed from the week that was.

Richfield Patch announces its first annual holiday contest, which includes nine other Minnesota Patch towns. Residents can submit pictures of its decorated home and be in the running to win a $200 gift card. Multiple immigrant employees were fired across the metro area after Immigration and Customs conducted I-9 audits looking for undocumented citizens. Eleven employees at the Richfield location were part of the firings, according to Pioneer Press article. Richfield Patch will continue to follow this story this week. The Richfield Band Boosters partnered with the Richfield Symphonic Band to put on a holiday concert to raise funds for the Richfield Public Schools band programs. Police are investigating an incident involving possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle on Dec. 2. An adult was charged with possession of marijuana on Dec. 2.
