Richfield Names 2013 Tom Spooner Award Recipient

Fourteen Richfield male athletes were up for the scholarship honor.

Richfield High School's 2013 Tom Spooner Award winner is Duncan Pederson. Thirteen other senior male athletes were nominated for the award, including: Kevin Krohn, Danny Opitz, Andrew Allen, Kory Lommen, Corban Halbur, Nate Luttenegger, Cameron Dearing, Andy Peterson, Deshawn Jones, Adam Aldrich, Chandler Arredondo, Raheim Hampton and Alex Mendele. According to the district's website: The Tom Spooner Award is given annually by our school to the Best Male Student-Athlete at Richfield as chosen by our Head Coaches.  Tom Spooner was a baseball player back in the late '50s and early 60's who died from Leukemia but was exemplary in his attitude on and off the field. Richfield's Sierra Ford-Washington Commits to NIACC

The Richfield basketball star will continue playing at the junior college next school year.

Richfield High School's Sierra Ford-Washington was presented with a national junior college letter of intent with North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA.  Ford-Washington will go from being a Spartan to a Trojan next year as part of the NIACC women's basketball team. Ford-Washington was a huge part of the Richfield girls basketball team's run for state the last two seasons. Richfield Announces Athena Scholarship Award Nominees

Six Richfield senior female athletes have been nominated for the honor.

The nominees for the 2013 Richfield High School Athena Scholarship Award are: The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department. Richfield will announce the winner at the end of this week. The winner is invited to attend the 41st awards luncheon on Friday, May 3 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Richfield Patch congratulates all the nominees.

Richfield Swimmers Nominated for 'Athlete of the Year' By State Coaches Association

A handful of other swimmers received local recognition from their team and coaches.

Richfield's Andy Peterson and Duncan Pederson were recently nominated for swimming and diving's Athlete of the Year award by the Minnesota Swim Coaches Association. According to Marc Hamren, head coach of the boys swim team, this is a major award in the high school swimming community. The following short biographys were sent to the coaches association by Hamren: Andy capped off his six year Richfield swimming career with a stellar senior season. Not a club swimmer, Andy takes most of the season to get in shape, then tapers like crazy. At state he was 2nd in the 200 IM, lowering the Spartan varsity record to 1:55.68. In addition, he already holds Richfield's back stroke record of 55.35 (set as a junior), and is part of each of our relay …

Richfield Crowns Cristian Hernandez as 2013 Fire 'N' Ice King

Hernandez was one of 11 candidates.

In a celebration before the entire student body, faculty and some staff, Richfield High School crowned Cristian Hernandez as its 2013 Fire 'N' Ice King. Cristian was escorted by Star Soto, and was one of 11 candidates for the crown. Other candidates included: Tenzin Numgyai, Andrew Allen, Andy Peterson, Austin Bolkcom, Sam Amundson, Sam Fink, Adam Aldrich, Nate Luttenegger, Kevin Krohn and Duncan Pederson. *Before the crowning, all the candidates did a little rendition of the "Harlem Shake." Holy Angels Football Players Commit to University Teams

See who's agreed to play college ball.

Academy of Holy Angels football players Mikias Alipate and Anthony Baysah have signed NCAA letters of intent to play college football. Alipate will enroll at South Dakota State University, and Baysah will enroll at Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Jessica January Commits to DePaul University

The Richfield senior and basketball star signs a letter of intent to attend the college Wednesday morning.

Richfield High School senior and star athlete, Jessica January, committed to DePaul University Wednesday morning. January signed a national letter of intent to attend the school among family, friends and school staff. January told Patch earlier in the school year she wasn't sure what her major would be, but she was definitely playing basketball in college. She helped lead the Spartans girls basketball team to the state championship finals earlier in 2012. Besides basketball, January was also a member of the volleyball squad and runs track and field.
