Richfield Crime Alert: 9 Residential Burglaries Reported This Month

Police are urging people to be watchful in their neighborhoods.

The Richfield Public Safety Department is reporting a surge in residential burglaries in town since Feb. 1. The following was released by the department in crime alert Thursday: Nine residential burglaries have been reported in Richfield since February 1, 2013. Most of the crimes occurred during the day while residents were away from home and involved forced entry into the back of the residence. Items stolen include electronics and jewelry. Seven of the burglaries occurred west of 35W. No suspect description is available. Richfield Police are urging people to be watchful and aware of suspicious activity, vehicles and individuals in neighborhoods. Sheriff: 'Prevent Burglaries During the Holidays' With These Tips

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek offers tips for keeping your home safe over the holidays.

Editor's Note: The following is a Hennepin County Sheriff's Office release. * Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the window so it’s easily visible. A burglar could smash the window and grab the packages.  * If you are away on a trip, ask a neighbor to help create a "lived in" look for your home.  Use a light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. A neighbor could even park a car on your driveway. * Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor. * Don't announce that you are out-of-town on social media sites.  Post your vacation photos on facebook when you return from your out-of-town …
