Spartans boys, girls basketball squads delivered winning campaigns with outlook of future prosperity.
If there were two common threads between the Richfield girls and boys basketball teams this past season, it was that both found more success than many figured and both still saw their seasons come to an end all-too soon. Both squads helped create a sense of community on many a cold winter night and gave not only students and parents, but an entire town something to cheer for and through their play brought a sense of pride to Richfield. Girls Hoopsters Post 23-5 Record "It surprised me how well we did," Spartans girls head coach LeeAnn Wise said. "I didn't think we'd end up with 23 wins." Paced by the efforts of the state's leading scorer, sophomore guard Jessica January, the Richfield girls basketball team posted a 23-5 overall record and …

Boys basketball season ends, city council hears of more trouble at Jun Bo restaurant and schools to cut 29 staff members. All this an whatever else you may have missed from the week that was.
Government The Richfield City Council heard a report of another incident at Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant and nightclub. The council has yet to vote on whether or not to renew the restaurant’s liquor license and this new incident has the potential to sway the council members’ decision. The Richfield Bicycle Master Plan Task Force met to further discuss potential bike routes. Each member was asked to analyze the routes and score them on effectiveness and compatibility. House Minority Leader Paul Thissen (DFL-Minneapolis), who represents part of Richfield, continued to press Republicans for their budget proposal early in the week. As the week went on Republicans presented budget targets, which Thissen criticized as being a classic case of “…

Winter sports season comes to an end in Richfield as Spartans and Stars both defeated in Section 6AAA tournament.
The winter season came to an end for both Richfield and Holy Angels on Tuesday night as both the Spartans and Stars boys basketball teams lost in their respective Section 6AAA playoff openers. Richfield Boys Basketball: Holy Family Catholic 71, Spartans 69 While the Richfield boys basketball team was the higher seed and held a 33-31 halftime lead, victory was not in the cards for the Spartans, who fell by a 71-69 score to visiting Holy Family Catholic. The fifth-seeded Fire managed to escape fourth-seeded Richfield with a slim victory despite a game-high 25 points from Spartans forward Jared Noonan, with guards Shawn Bear and John Johnson recording 15 and 11 points, respectively. The defeat concluded the Spartans' winter campaign with a 17…

Spartans lead until final two minutes before dropping regular-season finale, 51-50, to visiting Hill-Murray on Tuesday night.
It just wasn't meant to be for the Richfield boys basketball team in its regular-season finale at home Tuesday night. The Spartans, after leading for over 34 of 36 minutes of play, were over-taken in the closing moments by Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) champion Hill-Murray in a 51-50 defeat that concluded Richfield's pre-playoff schedule with a 17-9 overall record—11-5 in circuit play. While the Pioneers entered the game undefeated in CSC contests this winter, it was the Spartans that took the early advantage and held it throughout the majority of the matchup. Richfield led by double digits in both the first and second half, but could not quite shake the Pioneers—ranked eighth in Class AAA—as the visitors managed to creep back into the…

Richfield Patch's Weekly Review brings you all that you may have missed from the week that was.
If you forgot to log on to Richfield Patch at some point last week, have no fear. Our weekly review is here to catch you up on everything you may have missed. Government The Richfield City Council passed the Domestic Partnership Registration Ordinance, allowing both same-sex and heterosexual, long-term couples register their relationships with the city and be officially recognized. Rep. Linda Slocum (D-Richfield) responded to the repeal of the gun law that required background checks in order to purchase a gun. Slocum said the repeal jeopardizes citizens’ public safety and makes it easier for criminals to obtain firearms. Slocum also co-authored a bill that modified driver’s license fees and authored a bill that allocated funding for the …
