Veterans Park Christmas Tree Lot Opens Black Friday

Veterans Memorial Park is the Richfield destination for Christmas trees.

As we speak, crews are in the process of transforming the Veterans Memorial Park picnic shelter into a Christmas tree haven for its official opening Black Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. Clearwater, MN-based B&J Evergreen, in partnership with the city, is running the lot again this year and boasts trees of everykind, and at every price point. "[I would say] we have trees starting at $10 [for the smaller trees] and going all the way up to around $100 [or $200] for the 16- or 18-footers," Brad Johnson, co-owner of B&J Evergreen, told Richfield Patch. Brad Johnson's son and company co-owner, Trent Johnson, said the cost for average trees, after taxes, are $26, $33 and $40. In addition to "just selling trees," Trent Johnson said they brought back horse…

Minnesota consumer advocates and state officials have two words for shoppers who can’t wait for Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Be careful. “For people trying to find holiday deals, Black Friday and Cyber Monday hold a lot of allure,” says Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Minnesota and North Dakota. “What we’re aiming to do is remind people to think ahead, make a budget, be aware of store policies—particularly return policies—and not get so focused on potential bargains [that] they fall victim to scams or fraudulent websites.” Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is traditionally known as the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season. The term Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 after online …

Black Friday Gets Locals, Me Started on Holiday Shopping

Richfield Patch's Caitlin Burgess joins the Black Friday shopping extravaganza.

For eight years I worked retail and for eight, exceptionally long years I had the privilege of working Black Friday. If you didn't sense any sarcasm just now, you should have. Although working Black Friday was an emotional test for me, I always found it exciting. The halls were decked, mistletoe hung and wrapping paper was fully stocked. People looked so happy and so ready to give. However, I never understood how, after heaping piles of …
