The Richfield basketball star will continue playing at the junior college next school year.
Richfield High School's Sierra Ford-Washington was presented with a national junior college letter of intent with North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA. Ford-Washington will go from being a Spartan to a Trojan next year as part of the NIACC women's basketball team. Ford-Washington was a huge part of the Richfield girls basketball team's run for state the last two seasons. Jessica January was one of six girls nominated for the award.
One of Richfield High School's star female athletes, Jessica January, has been named as the 2013 Athena Scholarship Award recipient. The Athena Award is given to the "Outstanding Senior Female Athlete" in high schools throughout the metro and suburban Minneapolis area, according to the Richfield Athletic Department. Despite an unexpected loss to Red Wing Thursday, the Richfield High School girls basketball team brought its best to the court Saturday to snag the Class AAA third place title at the state tournament. The Lady Spartans took on Monticello High School at Concordia College Saturday afternoon, winning the matchup 64-39. The team's unfortunate loss to Red Wing in the semifinals, sent the Wingers to the finals to compete against defending champs DeLaSalle. Red Wing lost 65-50. The girls missed a shot at the state title Thursday, and the trash talk started Twitter shortly after.
Following Richfield's upset loss to Red Wing Thurday afternoon, fans on both sides of the court started throwing cyber bows on Twitter. Much of the tweet war was too inappropriate to print on Richfield Patch. However, some that were appropriate enough, can be seen in the window above. Richfield fans argued that Red Wing should have never won the game, while Red Wing rubbed it in. Someone predicted an actual fight, with a Richfield supporter putting money on the Spartans' town folk to win. Even Richfield girls basketball team member Bobbi Biever commented during the war of words, tweeting: "At least Richfield is classy." Richfield defeated Hill-Murray in the quarterfinals Wednesday to advance to the next round of play.
After defeating Hill-Murray in the first round of Class AAA state tournament play, the Richfield High School girls basketball team will take on Red Wing in the semifinals at noon Thursday at Target Center. The Lady Spartans easily beat the Pioneers 54-35 at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena Wedneday morning. As many may recall, Richfield opened last year's tournament against Red Wing, which ended in a 68-53 victory for the Spartans. Also making it to the semi-final round is Minneapolis's DeLaSalle. Richfield lost to DeLaSalle in the final tournament game last season. *DeLaSalle's plays Monticello at 2 p.m. Thursday at Target Center. The Richfield High School girls basketball team beat out Hill-Murray School in the first round of the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament Class AAA with a 54-35 win. The Lady Spartans led out of the gate and never looked back. At halftime, the team was up 30-17. Seniors Jessica January and Sierra Ford-Washington put up 19 and 13 points, respectively. This is the second consecutive year, and second year overall, that Richfield made it to the state tournament. Hill-Murray made its fourth consecutive and 13th overall tournament appearance. The Spartans girls basketball team is headed to state for the second year in a row.
The Richfield High School girls basketball team will begin its bid for state champions against Hill-Murray School Wednesday morning. The Lady Spartans trounced Chaska High School 72-45 last Thursday to ensure a trip to state, as well as the section 3AAA champions title. The team is heading to state for the second consecutive year, as well as the second time in school history. Last year, the team made it to the finals, where it fell to DeLaSalle. The game against Hill-Murray begins at 10 a.m. at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. The Richfield High School boys basketball team is moving on to another section playoff game after beating the Washburn Millers Tuesday night. The Spartans were down 41-29 at the half, but came back to win the game 69-63. The win brings the team to a 16-11-0 record on the season (15-11-0 overall in the regular season). Richfield will play Blake High School at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9. In addition, the Richfield girls basketball team has its final section game against the Chaska High School Hawks at 7 p.m. Thursday at Minnetonka High School.
