UPDATED: 'Watch' Upgraded to Winter Storm Warning for Saturday, Sunday

The National Weather Service forecasts that as many as six inches of snow could fall over the weekend.

Heavy Snow; Weekend Sporting Events Canceled

Saturday's snow wipes out schedule of events; make-up dates not announced yet.

The largest snowstorm to hit the metropolitan area in recent years wiped out the entire Saturday sports schedule for both Richfield High School and the Academy of Holy Angels. However, several Stars and Spartans teams did manage to get in their matchups in before the snows moved in. Richfield Gymnastics The Richfield gymnastics team won its home opener on Thursday night, defeating Classic Suburban Conference rival South St. Paul, 114.30-106.10. With Kelsey Metz out with injury, Sara Tseng took over as the Spartans top all-around performer and placed first on vault, second on balance beam and floor exercise and third on the uneven bars. Bad Weather Continues to Create Slick Roads in Richfield, Statewide

Winter storm systems sweep more freezing rain, sleet and snow across the state.

After a weekend of awful driving weather, Monday's wintery mix of snow and sleet is still creating dangerous road conditions for the Richfield community and drivers statewide. There were nearly 500 accidents reported over the weekend by the Minnesota State Patrol and drivers are not out of the woods yet. While the National Weather Service is predicting less than a half an inch of snow and ice accumulation in Richfield for Monday, the roads are still slick and the state patrol is urging people to avoid driving if possible. Richfield Public Works launched street crews on Saturday night from midnight until about 4:30 a.m. to salt Richfield roads, according to Chris Link, operations manager of the Streets and Forestry Division.
