Survivor of Minneapolis Workplace Shooting Calls for Universal Background Checks

John Souter was the only person shot at Accent Signage who survived. Richfield native Andrew Engeldinger killed six people then himself on Sept. 27, 2012 in Minneapolis.

The one person who was injured but not killed in Richfield native Andrew Engeldinger's 2012 shooting rampage at Accent Signage in Minneapolis spoke out Thursday, calling for background checks on anyone who wants to buy a gun. John Souter spoke at a press conference and rally at Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka, joined by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight, one of more than 100 gatherings of gun-control advocates nationwide. Several local news outlets carried reports on the event: Finance & Commerce: “I’m not the same person, that’s for sure. I don’t laugh the way I used to,” Souter said during the event. ... “Why? Why? VIDEO: Sami Rahamim Talks to CNN About Gun Violence

The SLP student, whom 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison invited to the State of the Union, said he supports limits on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Sami Rahamim, a St. Louis Park High student and the son of slain Accent Signage owner Reuven Rahamim, spoke to CNN on Wednesday about gun violence and meeting with President Barack Obama. Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison invited Rahamim to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union as part of an effort to step up pressure for tighter gun control laws. Each member of Congress gets to bring just one guest to the House gallery during the speech. Reuven Rahamim, 61, died Sept. 27 when an employee who had just been fired took out a gun and shot Rahamim and other Accent employees. Andrew Engeldinger then shot himself. The Minneapolis business was open fired on by Richfield native Andrew Engeldinger Sept. 27.

Accent Signage, the site of a horrific shooting on Sept. 27, 2012, released a statement Tuesday morning regarding the Newtown, CT school shooting: Our thoughts and prayers are with the community of Newtown, Connecticut. We were horrified to hear about yet another senseless act of violence that robbed families of their loved ones. We mourn the loss of the twenty young students, along with the seven adults who devoted themselves to enriching children's lives, even with their last heroic actions. Richfield Patch covered a lot of different stories, topics and events throughout 2012, but there were a few that stood out as the most interesting, important or possibly infamous to our readers. The following is the No. 9 story of the year. *** After receiving the news of his termination the afternoon of Sept. 27, Richfield native Andrew Engeldinger took out a gun and began to open fire on his now former co-workers. Eight were shot inside Accent Signage, before Engeldinger turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Six victims died from their injuries. Employees Say Accent Signage Will Continue After Shooting

The business will stay open after six employees died at the hands of a former co-worker, the Star Tribune reported.

The Minneapolis business where a fired employee killed six others and himself Sept. 27 will continue. That was the word Monday from family members of Accent Signage founder and owner Reuven Rahamim, the Star Tribune reported, in spite of the deaths: "Their loss has taken a tremendous toll on our company and had an unimaginable impact on our families," [Shereen Rahamim, wife of Reuvan Rahamim] said. "We take great comfort in the community's support during this troubled time. A fund established at Wells Fargo bank by the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association will help the victims' families. ... Documentary in Works on Victim of Minneapolis Workplace Shooting

Keith Basinski died Sept. 27 while making a stop as a UPS driver at Accent Signage. Local filmmaker Deacon Warner is paying homage to him in a new documentary, the Southwest Journal reports.

It's been just three weeks since Richfield native Andrew Engeldinger open fired on his former Accent Signage co-workers before killing himself. Spring Lake Park resident Keith Basinski was among the six victims who have now died after being shot multiple times. Basinski, a UPS driver, was making a stop at the business on his regular route. Local filmaker Deacon Warner, a resident of Minneapolis' Bryn Mawr neighborhood, has nearly completed a documentary video on Basinski, the Southwest Journal reported Tuesday: Taking the suggestion of resident Iliana Wilson, Warner interviewed people about their memories of Basinski, who worked in Bryn Mawr for 29 years. “He was more than a UPS driver, he had a real presence,” said Warner, who teaches …
