Viewfinder: Volunteering at Richfield's Value Village

Richfield Patch Editor Caitlin Burgess disconnects from the computer and puts her hands to work at Arc's Value Village.

Patch is a big proponent of volunteerism. This is why many times throughout the year, local editors all over the country get into the community and give back as part of Patch's Give 5 volunteer program.

On April 14 I spent a couple hours in the backroom of in Richfield sorting, tagging and hanging donated clothing so it could be put on the sales floor.

Arc's Value Village is a nonprofit that sells gently used and new clothing, accessories, housewares and more. You name it, they probably got it. In addition, Arc's partners with many programs including ones that serve the developmentally disabled; one of the programs had a small group there sorting. A group of middle school kids came in to sort clothing as well.

I have to admit, even with a retail background, I'd never seen a backroom such as the one at Arc's. There had to be thousands of items that needed to be gone through for quality, and tagged and hung for sale.

I snapped a few photos while I worked and chatted. Enjoy!
