Stars, Spartans Soccer Squads Look Ahead to Playoffs

Holy Angels, Richfield sides preparing for sectional play, set to commence next week.

With the regular season wrapping up, the boys and girls soccer squads from both and the are making their final preparations for sectional play, with is set to commence next week.

Holy Angels Boys Soccer

The only local soccer squad with a regular-season game remaining, the Holy Angels boys put their final touch on a Missota Conference championship campaign with a 1-0 home win over Chaska on Thursday.

, Thursday's contest was more of a victory lap for the Stars, who won the conference by two games with a 10-2-3 overall record and a spotless 7-0-0 Missota mark.

Charlie Koontz took over the team's scoring lead with the lone goal versus the Hawks, he now has nine tallies on the season—one better than Sam Brenny, Shon Jordan and Lucas Ciabattoni, who all have eight goals thus far.

Holy Angels, ranked sixth in Class A, closes its pre-playoff schedule at Rochester Century at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Following that game, the Stars move into the Section 3A Tournament, likely as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed with a home game on Oct. 11. Seedings and pairings have yet to be announced. 

Richfield Boys Soccer

lost 3-2 at Mahtomedi on Thursday to wrap the regular season with a 3-11-2 overall record and a 2-7-1 Classic Suburban Conference mark.

scored both goals for the Spartans and ended the regular season with a team-high 12 tallies.

Next up for Richfield is the Section 3A Tournament, slated to begin on Oct. 10. Seedings and pairings have not yet been announced. 

Holy Angels Girls Soccer

Class A's fifth-ranked ended a five-game winless streak with a 4-0 shutout of Missota rival Chaska at home on Thursday. 

Goalkeeper Caroline Paulson made four saves for a clean sheet, while Veronica Prickel, Megan Nicklay, Kayla Mulrooney and Maggie Farmer all scored for the home side.

The win gave the Stars an 8-5-3 overall record and a 4-2-1 conference mark as the squad moves into the Section 3A Tournament next week. 

Sectional seedings and pairings have not yet been announced, if Holy Angels claims a top-three seed, it will have a first-round bye. If not, the Stars will play an opening-round game on Oct. 11, most likely at home.

Richfield Girls Soccer

Results for the 's scheduled regular-season concluding game versus Minneapolis Washburn on Thursday were not reported.

The Spartans entered what was to be the regular-season finale with a 1-10 overall record after finishing at 0-10 in the Classic Suburban.

Richfield begins Section 3A play on Oct. 11 against a yet-to-be determined opponent. 

Holy Angels Volleyball

A three-game sweep (11-25, 10-25, 12-25) to visiting Shakopee, the fifth-ranked team in Class AAA, dropped the Holy Angels volleyball team to 7-12 overall and 1-4 in the Missota.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Stars host Washburn on Oct. 11.

Richfield Volleyball

The improved to 10-9 overall and 6-5 in the Classic Suburban with a five-game match win (25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-7) over visiting Tartan on Thursday.

Scores and statistics for scheduled Thursday meets involving the Holy Angels and Richfield girls swim/dive teams were not reported; results and statistics from a scheduled competition involving the Holy Angels cross-country teams on Wednesday were not made available.
