Richfield Boys Hockey: Waconia 5, Spartans 2

The Richfield hockey team's first trip out of the metropolitan area proved to not be a kind one as the Spartans dropped their second-straight game in a 5-2 loss to Waconia.

Early on, the game was going fairly well for Richfield as the Spartans held a 1-1 tie with the Wildcats after forward Tyler Martinez's goal just nine seconds into the second period.

However, Waconia exploded for four goals in the frame to take a 5-1 lead into the third period, where another Martinez goal could only cut the Wildcats' lead to the eventual final of three scores.

Richfield goaltender Jon McGinness made 24 saves in the loss that dropped the Spartans to 3-2 on the season.

Next up for Richfield is a home matchup against the re-formed St. Paul Highland Park team on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Scots are fielding an independent varsity team for the first time since 1987 and are 0-4 on the season thus far.

Holy Angels Girls Hockey: Northfield 3, Stars 0

Host Northfield scored one goal in each period to shutout the Holy Angels girls hockey team, 3-0, at the Northfield Ice Arena.

The Stars could not muster a score on any of the 17 shots on the Raiders' goal, while Holy Angels goaltender Kelly Mellon made 24 saves in the loss that dropped her team to 1-5-1 on the year.

Holy Angels returns home to the Richfield Ice Arena to face Wayzata at 7:15 p.m. Thursday night.
