Spartans Boys Hockey Team Tops Orioles in Overtime

Harris' goal in extra period give Richfield its first win in a month; Spartans hoopsters sweep Simley.

An overtime victory for the Richfield boys hockey team and a pair of wins for the Spartans basketball squads highlighted a busy weekend in athletics around the city.

Richfield Boys Hockey: Spartans 5, St Louis Park 4 (OT)

The goal at 2:39 by Tim Harris during the overtime period gave the its first victory in a month as the Spartans won at St. Louis Park, 5-4, to improve to 7-12-1 on the season.

Mick Dhein scored twice in the game, with Tyler Klopp and Tyler Martinez joining Harris with one goal apiece. Joe McGuinness made 25 saves for the victory.

The win follows a 13-0 loss at Hill-Murray for the Spartans, who return to Classic Suburban Confefence (CSC) action against Henry Sibley at the at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night; Richfield is 0-5-1 in the conference this year.

Richfield Girls Hockey: St. Cloud 5, Spartans 1

The concluded the 2010-11 regular season with a 7-0 loss to Hill-Murray and a 5-1 defeat against St. Cloud on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Richfield Ice Arena.

Katie Johnson scored the Spartans' lone goal of the two-game stretch in the second period against St. Cloud as made 92 saves total in the back-to-back contests.

Richfield, 4-17-3 overall, begins play in the Section 5A Tournament against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Feb. 9.

Richfield Boys Basketball: Spartans 92, Simley 56

The improved to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in the CSC with a 92-56 win at Simley on Friday.

Jared Noonan led all scorers with 20 points, while Spartans teammate Jordan Sefon scored 18 points in the victory.

Richfield travels to North St. Paul for a 7 p.m. start on Tuesday night.

Richfield Girls Basketball: Spartans 64, Simley 28

A 62-28 home defeat of Simley on Friday night pushed the record to 15-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Jessica January logged a game-high 23 points, with fellow teammates, Hannah Wise and Sierra Ford-Washington, logging 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Richfield hosts North St. Paul at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Holy Angels Boys Hockey: Stars 4, Shakopee 1

The remained perfect in the Missota Conference with a 4-1 win at Shakopee on Saturday afternoon.

Joseph LaBate notched a hat trick with three goals, while Mario Bianchi scored once and Will Dupont made 16 saves in the win that improved the Stars to 14-6 overall and 10-0 in the Missota.

Holy Angels hosts Northfield at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Holy Angels Girls Basketball: New Prague 66, Holy Angels 53

A 66-53 loss at New Prague on Friday night dropped the to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the Missota.

The Stars held a 33-29 halftime lead, but cold not hold on despite a game-high 18 points from and 11 points from Mary Margaret Duffy.

Holy Angels hosts Red Wind at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Holy Angels Boys Basketball: New Prague 53, Holy Angels 45

The Holy Angels boys basketball team could not dig out of a 23-13 halftime deficit before falling, 53-45, to New Prague on Friday night.

Sam Keis scored a Stars-best 11 points, with Damon Woods chipping in 10 points in the loss.

Holy Angels hosts Chanhassen at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Holy Angels Girls Hockey: Shakopee 9, Stars 1

A 9-1 loss to Shakopee on Friday night concluded the regular season with a 1-19-1 overall record — 0-11-1 in Missota play.

Caroline Reister made 34 saves for the Stars in the loss, with Sam Maijer scoring the lone goal of the game for the hosts.

Holy Angels begins play in the Section 2AA playoffs against a yet-to-be-determined opponent at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
