Richfield, Holy Angels End Tennis Season at Sections

The Spartans, Stars competed at the Section 6AA singles and doubles tournaments at the University of Minnesota on Tuesday

The and Academy of teams competed in the Section 6AA singles and doubles tournaments Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

None of the Spartans’ or Stars’ athletes advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals in either tournament.

On the singles side, Holy Angels’ Lucas Ciabattoni went 2-1 on the day, beating St. Louis Park’s Brody Ryan 6-3, 6-2 and Minneapolis Southwest’s Evan Mair 6-1, 6-0. He lost to top-seeded Ryan Erickson of Hopkins, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

His teammate, Peter McGrane, defeated Patrick Henry’s Meng Thao 6-0, 6-0 before losing to No. 2 seeded Mark Conrad of Robbinsdale Armstrong, 7-5, 6-1.

Richfield’s pair of singles players, Alex Maki and Mo Heckel, lost in the first round to a pair of Southwest players. Maki lost 6-4, 6-3 to Evan Mair, while Heckel lost to Beau Baker 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles action, Holy Angels’ Joseph Rys and Aaron Rieger had the No. 6 seed in the tournament. They went 1-1 on the day, defeating Edina before falling to Minneapolis South in the section quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0.

Will Kotovic and Joshua Holt won their first match against Minneapolis Roosevelt before falling to Hopkins in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.

Richfield’s Paul Youngblom and Nick Pritchard lost to Robbinsdale Armstrong in the first round, while Ben Dimond and Shawn Tandon also lost to an Armstrong squad in the opening round. Both teams went 0-1 on the day.
