Holy Angels Boys Hockey Team Falls in Sectional Opener

Stars topped by No. 4 seed Prior Lake; Richfield basketball teams split non-conference matchups on Thursday.

The 2010-11 hockey season has officially come to an end in Richfield as the Holy Angels boys pucksters were defeated in the Section 2AA opener, one night after the same fate befell the Spartans in the 2A playoffs. Off the rink, the Richfield boys and girls basketball teams split their non-conference matchups.

Holy Angels Boys Hockey: Prior Lake 4, Stars 3

One goal in each period was not enough to lift Holy Angels to victory in the Section 2AA boys hockey playoff opener as Prior Lake scored twice in the first and second frames to register a 4-3 win at .

Joseph LaBate scored twice, with Zach Hartley scoring once as Brett Pierce made 29 saves in the loss.

Holy Angels concluded its winter with a 16-9-1 record.

Richfield Girls Basketball: Spartans 63, Holy Family Catholic 49

After finding out it had received the No. 2 seed for the Section 6AAA Tournament, the Richfield girls basketball team went out and won, 63-49, at Holy Family Catholic in Waconia, MN.

Four Spartans scored in double digits, led by 24 points, with Hannah Wise scoring 14 points, Sierra Ford-Washington 12 points and Bryann Guyton 11 points.

Richfield closes out the regular season by hosting Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) rival Henry Sibley at 7 p.m. Friday, then opens sectional play at home against No. 7 seed Holy Angels on at 7 p.m. March 3.

Richfield Boys Basketball: St. Paul Johnson 87, Spartans 72

The fell to 16-8 on the season with an 87-72 loss to St. Paul Johnson at home.

Jared Noonan led the Spartans with 27 points, with Jared Etienne and John Johnson scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Richfield travels to Henry Sibley on Friday night, then concludes the regular season next Tuesday at home against already-crowned CSC champion Hill-Murray.
