Baseball Seasons End For Richfield, Holy Angels

Spartans, Stars both upended in sectional playoffs last week.

Baseball players from both Richfield and Holy Angels will now be looking towards American Legion play this summer as both the Spartans and Stars were knocked out of the Section 6AAA Tournament last week.

Minneapolis Southwest 2, Richfield 1

was felled, 2-1, in eight innings by Minneapolis Southwest—whom the Spartans had defeated in the regular-season finale—at home on May 26 after being held to two hits by Lakers hurler Travis Ullman, who leads the metro with a 0.48 earned run average.

The loss concluded Richfield's season with a 13-7 overall record.

Joe Griffin led the Spartans with four home runs this season, while Jordan Zoellmer paced the Richfield pitchers with a 6-1 record and a .59 ERA.

Robbinsdale Armstrong 5, Holy Angels 4

After winning its playoff opener, 12-3, against Bloomington Jefferson at Dred Scott Park on May 26, was defeated by the section's top-seeded Robbinsdale Armstrong, 5-4, on May 28 to be eliminated from the postseason.

The Stars wrapped the 2011 season with a 9-10 record.

Zach Hartley and Matt Workman led the Stars with batting averages of .449 and .448, respectively, with Workman claiming a team-high 25 runs batted in. led the Holy Angels pitchers with a 5-2 record and a 1.28 ERA with 81 strikeouts.
