Spartans Girls Soccer Wins, Volleyball Loses In Openers

Fall sports season in full swing with football set to start.

The fall sports season is now in full swing as the (RHS) girls soccer team won its 2011 opener, while the Spartans volleyball squad dropped its first match of the year.

Richfield Girls Soccer

The Richfield girls soccer team began its campaign with a 4-2 defeat of Minneapolis Roosevelt on Wednesday evening.

Individual statistics were not available. The Spartans open the Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) season at North St. Paul at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Richfield Volleyball

Henry Sibley managed to squeak by the visiting Richfield volleyball team in the season opener, as the Spartans fell in five games (25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 15-25, 14-16) in West St. Paul.

Individual statistics were not available. Richfield plays at home for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 6 against South St. Paul.

Richfield Boys Soccer

With a 5-0 home loss to North St. Paul on Tuesday in the Classic Suburban opener, the fell to 0-2 on the season and is still in search of its first goal of the autumn.

The Spartans head back out on the road for its most daunting test in a 5 p.m. Thursday matchup at No. 1-ranked Apple Valley. The Eagles are the defending Class AA state champion.

Richfield Girls Tennis

The Richfield girls tennis team claimed its most-lopsided victory of the season by means of a 6-1 defeat of St. Paul Highland Park on Wednesday afternoon. 

Individual statistics were not available. The Spartans are off until next Thursday when they host Tartan at 3:30 p.m.

Holy Angels Girls Soccer

Without registering an official victory this season, the girls soccer team finished second in the Showcase Tournament at Benilde-St. Margaret's on Tuesday night.

The Stars lost 3-1 to Blake—ranked fifth in Class A—on Tuesday to take second in the tourney, after topping the host Red Knights—ranked first in Class A—in a penalty shootout last Thursday.

However, the BSM game counts as a tie as the Minnesota State High School League does not recognize shootouts during the regular season.

Henceforth, Holy Angels, who wedged a 3-1 loss to Totino-Grace last Saturday in-between their Showcase appearances, take a 0-2-1 record up north as they take on Two Harbors and Cloquet on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Holy Angels Volleyball

The Holy Angels volleyball team earned its first victory of the year by sweeping Blake in three games (25-11, 25-6, 25-18) on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Stars play at Benilde-St. Margaret's at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Richfield, Holy Angels Football

The against North St. Paul, with the Holy Angels gridders beginning their campaign at Chisago Lakes at 7 p.m. Friday.
