Richfield Soccer Teams Eliminated in Playoff Openers

Spartans boys fall in overtime, girls shutout in Section 3A Tournament.

The post-season began for three local soccer teams on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it ended for two of them as both the boys and girls squads were eliminated in their playoff openers while the boys advanced in their bracket.

Holy Angels Boys Soccer

The Holy Angels boys soccer team, ranked sixth in Class A, had little trouble in its Section 3A Tournament opener as the Stars shut out Bethany Academy by a 5-0 score at home.

Individual statistics from the game were not made available. The Stars, now 11-3-3 on the year, host Minnehaha Academy on Thursday evening in the second round.

Host Minnehaha Academy defeated Richfield in the opening game of the Section 3A boys soccer tournament, ending the Spartans' season with an overtime goal to boot the visitors from the playoffs in a 2-1 decision. Individual statistics were not made available.

Richfield's autumn campaign came to a close with a 3-12-2 record, the Spartans defeated Mahtomedi (1-0), Simley (3-1) and Bethany Academy (5-0) while tying Rosemount (1-1) and Tartan (2-2) this year.

Richfield Girls Soccer

The 's 2011 season came to a close in a 5-0 loss to Trinity School in its 3A opener, concluding the Spartans' fall campaign with a 1-12 record.

Richfield won its opening game of the season, 4-2 versus Minneapolis Roosevelt on Aug. 31, but scored only one more goal — in a 10-1 loss at Simley on Sept. 6 — over the next 12 games.

Holy Angels Volleyball

The Holy Angels volleyball team improved to 8-12 this season with a 3-1 defeat of visiting non-conference opponent Minneapolis Washburn on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Stars play at Northfield on Thursday night.

Richfield Volleyball

A 3-0 loss at North St. Paul dropped the to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the Classic Suburban Conference.
