Update: Richfield, Holy Angels Girls Hockey to Form Co-Op

The one-year agreement allows Richfield to continue searching for a permanent co-op for future seasons

The and girls hockey teams have formed a cooperative agreement, Richfield athletic director Todd Olson confirmed Saturday.

The co-op was approved at Thursday’s Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Board of Directors meeting in Brooklyn Center. It is a one-year agreement between Holy Angels and Richfield, and Olson said the co-op should be officially ratified on Monday.

Richfield’s declining numbers within its hockey program have led to RHS looking to form a cooperative over the past four years. Olson said Richfield has spoken with five schools about a long-term agreement.

For this winter, the Spartans and Stars will join, with Richfield sending one senior to the Stars’ program. The younger players will be placed in the Richfield Youth Hockey Association’s U12, U14 and U16 programs, Olson said.

Olson said Holy Angels was gracious in letting Richfield join on for the year after the Spartans folded the program for lack of numbers.

“We put the co-op together, and we asked the league at the executive level to approve that,” Olson said. “Hopefully it makes everyone aware that we’ve been pursuing this co-op in the metro.”

The Stars’ squad is currently 1-6 this season, including 0-2 in Missota Conference play. After going 16-10 in 2008-09, Holy Angels has gone 6-39-2 over the past two years. The Stars’ will next face Red Wing at home on Dec. 6. Richfield has gone 11-37-3 over that same two-year span.
